Rear view camera

Barcobird

Recommended Posts

Well at least the existing camera uses the regular PAL video system much like most European reversing cameras. I think the major challenge will be finding cameras with compatible connectors (8 pin). My internet search did not reveal any. It may be that there is an adaptor available (eg 4 pin to 8 pin) but I suspect that information will come from a conversation with one of the suppliers who specialise in reversing cameras. If compatible cameras/adapters are locatable installation should be a breeze.

It will be a stroke of luck if you find a dual lens camera with compatible 8 pin connectors. Most dual lens cameras will have two leads exiting from the case and usually terminating in either a 4 pin S-Video or aviation type connector.

Your current camera is undoubtedly of Chinese origin and as is common there will be no name of the manufacturer on the product.

There is no standard for the connection pinouts on reversing cameras.

However, all is not lost as it should be relatively simple to unfasten the rear of the connector and see which wires connect to which pins

Most manufacturers comply to a colour code of:

Yellow main video

Red 12 V +

Black 0V

The other cable colours are random, sometimes used for audio.

A precaution would be to measure with a DMM which cables have a 12V signal.

You would then have to make up the appropriate adapter cable between the new cameras and the current connectors.

The only make of camera I’ve come across using an 8 pin mini DIN is Clarion. I’ve not had much luck with cams on the Clarion websiter however I have turned up this

https://www.carfeature.de/en/hifi-navigation/cameras/other/6186/rear-view-camera-universal-truck-caravan-angle-1700-black which has an ‘8 pin mini plug’

Thanks for the info Bruce, I have dropped them an email, see if I get a response.

The one caveat I’d add is that the label on the photo of the camera seems to indicate that it may not be for the PAL video system so caution may be required.

There are plenty of on-line mentions of ‘8-pin’ cables for reversing-camera systems.

As AliB (who knows about such things) is wary of a dual-lens camera being identifiable that would be compatible with Barcobird’s Pilote’s existing system, I would have thought the time has come for Barcobird (if he really wants a dual-lens camera) to seriously consider involving a specialist company that can inspect the present system and will have cameras available that can be used for testing.

Guesswork (however inspired) about technical aspects of the Pilote’s existing system is fine, but a good quality dual-lens camera won’t be cheap and there’s no point Barcobird wasting money buying an unsuitable one.

I quite agree under normal circumstances Derek, but as we can't move it was a worthwhile use of my time searching the internet for a replacement. Unfortunately like most things in my motorhome ownership world it is not as easy as it should be !

I pursued a similar enquiry some years back and at that time the advice I received was that the connectors for monitors and cameras were not standardised as between the different manufacturers. In effect, that however many pins are visible at the connectors there is no guarantee that all pins are actually connected, or that the same pins serve the same functions for both monitor and camera. So, even if the same wiring convention is adopted by both monitor and camera manufacturer, they may wire their connectors to different pins, so that a given cable that matches the monitor connections, for example, may not talk sense to the camera. In effect, the connecting cable is purpose made to link a monitor of brand A to a camera of brand Z, and the whole is then sold as a functioning kit. Swapping either the cable, the monitor, or the camera thus becomes a lottery as to whether the result will be satisfactory or useless.

The wiring within the connectors can be swapped around to create the desired result, but it takes something of a specialist to work out which wire needs to go where in each connector. From what Ali has said, it seems the above remains broadly true.

It that is correct, I think you'll have to wait until you can get to someone who can pair your connecting cable to whichever camera meets your requirements, possibly by making up a couple of short intermediate adaptor cables correctly aligning the wires into the connectors to get video, 12V power, and common return wires connected to the appropriate pins.

I recall visting the Conrad Anderson stand at the NEC in 2015 and asking about replacing my Rapido’s Dometic single-lens camera with a dual-lens one and being told that, although a wide range of adapter cables were available, the feasibility of doing this would depend on the cable that Rapido had chosen to factory-fit. I might have taken the risk and assumed that a suitable cable was already in place If Rapido had offered a dual-lens camera as an option, but that wasn’t the case.

The Pilote 2017 catalogue (Page 46) shows the monitor that is installed in Peter’s Galaxy

http://docs.campingcar-infos.com/docs/Pilote/Pilote%202017%20Catalogue.pdf

The catalogue indicates that Galaxy models having the “Emotion” specification had a reversing-camera with 7” monitor as standard, while this was an option on vehicles with the “Sensation” or “Essential” specification.

As I said earlier, assuming that Pilote bought in a ’system’ that comprised the monitor + camera + cabling (and possibly including the monitor mount/housing too) I’d expect any Pilote motorhome with that system to be supplied with user-instruction documentation on how to use it.

You could consider completely replacing the cable. It may not be too difficult to pull a new cable whilst extracting the old one.

If I did that what makes you think the new cable would fit the monitor *-) ?

Often buying a kit with a monitor, cable and camera is not much more than buying a cable and camera. That way you know everything will be compatible.

I thought this was going to be a 10 minute job changing one camera for another plugging in one extra socket. (lol)

  • 1 month later...

I can now finally conclude this post which may be of interest to Pilote owners!

Why things are always so long winded and complicated is beyond me. I have gone from pillar to post trying to find a supplier.

The supplying dealer suggested I contact a firm specialising in cameras and they didn’t know who it was.

After contacting the supplying dealer again they eventually told me the cameras were fitted by Pilote, seems obvious and don’t know why they couldn’t have told me weeks ago. Anyway end result, if I want a double camera they can get one from Pilote :-) However I would have to fork out over £420 plus pp and fitting.

I might as well start again with a new system and save a few bob or maybe I will stick to using rear view mirrors (lol) (lol)
