A few years ago I looked into importing from Germany and the insurance was the biggest stumbling block.

A member of one of the Forums i was on said his technique was to buy a 'cherished plate' and insure that registration, then fit that at the dealer to then drive home?

Sounded really dodgy to me... :-(

I don't think that would be legal unless the vehicle was registered with the DVLA before you drove it on the cherished plate.

The process seems clear to me now.

1) Arrange for vehicle being bought to be provided with an Export Plate (whether this be a dealer or private sale) and third party insurance to cover importation journey to home. Drive extra carefully as only third party insurance cover

2) From UK port there is an option to arrange for UK fully comp insurance on the VIN of the vehicle

3) Alternatively drive home on the export plate and third party insurance.

4) Complete any import tax paperwork and fees

5) Arrange for import paperwork and Lights/Speedo/Inspection to be completed

6) Register with DVLA and get UK number plate

7) Update/take out UK fully comp insurance if not already taken out.

8) Relax now and enjoy your new/second hand motorhome
