Lenz
Since it hasn't been mentioned in this thread as far as I can see, a jammed or blocked EGR also causes heavy black smoke from the exhaust when the engine is put under load because there isn't enough air getting into the cylinders. sheer lunar-see
I lived in France for 6 years and now live in Spain, I have always bought the cheapest Diesel I can get my hands on, and can honestly say I cannot tell the difference in performance or economy and have never experienced any problems using it. Don't know what all the fuss is about. I have run Renaults, citroens, Fiats, Opels and Peugeots, maybe I've been lucky.
Cattwg
Thank you Lenz. That's a useful indicator of a possible EGR problem. Cattwg :-D
Popty
Had a similar issue with my Fiat Ducato 2005, but now every 3rd tank of diesel I put in a bottle of "diesel cleaner" (500ml) from Halfords or motor accessory shops, & since doing this, my exhaust smoke level has halved and this shows on the smoke report at MOT time, fuel economy has improved (now get best part of 30 mpg, with Smart fortwo tow car behind), no more issues with pulling power or smoke, cheap result, got my last 2 pack of diesel cleaner from Aldi for a fiver, also when getting diesel check the pump as if its diesel to EN590, that fuel contains 5% of bio diesel, I always use premium derv.
