Derek Uzzell
Several UK ‘packaged’ bank accounts offer travel insurance as do certain American Express credit cards https://www.which.co.uk/money/banking/bank-accounts/best-bank-accounts/best-packaged-bank-accounts-av2xv2k5wq9m https://www.choose.co.uk/guide/travel-accident-insurance-adequate-cover.html
Derek Uzzell
curdle - 2021-01-01 7:22 PM I suspect I am about to test the limits of the scheme in wholly alarming fashion. I took out a travel insurance with medical cover with Surestart because their scheme is advertised as providing ing cover for countries listed as essential travel only. Having duly paid, I was not emailed the documents. They emailed a link, which consistently timed out as a corrupt url... Are you sure your travel insurance is with “Surestart” and not “Staysure”? There is a South African company called “Surestart” that has insurance connotations https://www.surestart.co.za/ but “Staysure” definitely offers travel insurance and its website mentions travel insurance against FCDO advice. https://www.staysure.co.uk/fco-advice-travel-insurance/

Derek, you are correct, I get the two mixed up.
breakaleg
Hi, It said in the paper this morning that the ehic card is valid until it runs out of date but it will be replaced with a GHIC the G stands for Global. So perhaps a better deal ? or maybe not. lol Pete
TeamRienza
And of course, right on cue there are now adverts on google offering to provide you with a GHIC. These are the usual scam of charging you money to do what is free on the official government website. Davy
curdle
As an update, I was discharged from hospital in Valencia today after a full two weeks stay and a full hip replacement.. OHS (Overseas Health Services) issued the hospital with a PRC (Provisional Replacement Certificate at the last moment but it is done and it would appear the EHIC has 5 yrs to run. It remains to be seen, the impact (if any) when the new Global scheme is issued. Now to the issue of wielding a Zimmer frame inside a MH.
Brian Kirby
Nasty experience! I'm glad it eventually worked out OK, though I don't envy you having to rehabilitate in a motorhome! I assume it will take several weeks to fuse heal, so be very careful how you go in the meantime. Did you also get the show that hit Madrid? Did you also get the show that hit Madrid? Yes ditto. Glad you are sorted. However I disagree Brian regarding the motorhome. Everything is handy as long as you have someone able to fill up the water and empty the bog! (lol)
curdle
Brian Kirby - 2021-01-12 12:52 AM Nasty experience! I'm glad it eventually worked out OK, though I don't envy you having to rehabilitate in a motorhome! I assume it will take several weeks to fuse heal, so be very careful how you go in the meantime. Did you also get the show that hit Madrid? Thanks Brian. I assumed the same as you in that recovering in the motorhome would be fairly counter-productive, so booked an Airbnb cottage in Aragon. Missed the Madrid snow but caught full force in Teruel province. Fortunately my MH is winter equipped although with my wife driving cautiously a few oncoming car drivers seemed to imagine she should drive off-road when the road narrowed with snow drifts. I eventually took over the driving to get through the passes. Never been so grateful for automatic and low range gearing. The cottage proved a mistake. Just getting from the MH to the building was a 40 m obstacle course of snow drift, ice and water. Barryd999 is right, it soon proved that the MH is much more practical in that all is accessible and I can move myself around. The cottage left me so much more dependent on my wife and movement from room to room quite exhausting. After 3 days packed it in and back to the MH. It has certainly made me more aware of potential issues with mobility in the future and I wonder if any manufacturers specialise in interior disabled access? I worry a bit about durability of some of the fittings with added strain I subject them to as I move around.
curdle
Today I received the new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Use of the word "global" in this context seems to be along the same lines as the US "world series" football. It is in fact a replacement of the EHIC, covering all the European countries under the same conditions as before, however there is no longer cover for Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland. If you were in any of this 4 countries before Jan 1st 2021 and are still there, you will be covered under the old EHIC until you leave. Apart from the 4 above, it is not too bad to be covered for the rest of Europe. Could have been a lot worse.
keninpalamos
I ordered one on the NHS site Nightmare kept timing out so I called them and received it 3 weeks ago No longer an EHIC but a GHIC (Global). Laid out the same pretty much the main difference is the background being a Union Flag.( which becomes Jack when I'm on the ferry) It gives second and first name, date of birth, personal ID number, ID number of the institution, ID number of the card and expiry dated. lancepar
Our cards came back today, the GHIC's are very pretty as they now display a Union flag as the background. Quick turnaround by NHS Buisness Services Authority. Got a nice new Black passport as well, just waiting for the all clear when it comes. Stay Safe. flyboyprowler
For anyone that is interested, the phone number for the GHIC card is 0300 3301350 but in a situation where you do not have a card, become ill, but have been previously registered, the number 0191 2151999 can be called from abroad, and you will need your NHS number or your N.I. number, and they will liase with the hospital to approve treatment. For Brits resident in Spain it is a different card, but can still be ordered from the UK.
