Mobile data usage when abroad

Surely as long as roaming rates remain abolished its better to use your UK sim allowance than purchase an extra sim locally even if some are limited. Plus if its a phone sym and people call you on it if its not in the device they wont get you. I think you can put a divert in of course.

In Spain, at the moment:

Lebara PAYG on the Vodafone network 80Gb plus 1000 minutes to Spain and 62 other countries for €30. Or 24Gb for €15. Lycamobile PAYG on the Orange network 44Gb plus some minutes for €20.

I use a Spanish sim card purely for the data in a 4G router. I just use whichever PAYG network is offering the best deal for data at the time. I don't use the minutes so the number does not matter.

Its all a backward step though. I remember the old days before roaming charges were abolished messing on with various sims. I settled on a Toggle sim in the end and what a PIA it was. I used to have to divert my Vodafone phone to it on the ferry and then watch my usage all the time and the signal coverage was nowhere near as good as Vodafone because Vodafone uses a wider range of partners to connect to so you pretty much always got connected.

I think I pay about a tenner a month for 60gb of data and unlimited calls. More than enough for general usage and maybe the odd bit of streaming. It seems questionable if Vodafone will limit that as some on here are saying thats not the case for them and its not been the case for me in the past.

I hope we get to keep the free roaming down the line but there is no obligation now for mobile companies to do so and lets face it, they fought tooth and nail to prevent it.

Just for interest, do these PAYG networks have limitations. i.e. do you lose the GB allowance if not used (as used to be in Spain some years ago) or can the usage be rolled over many months?

Yes, data is rolled over provided you renew the same bundle.

In my experience the market in Spain is not as competitive as it is in the UK. I am aware that you can get some amazing deals in the UK but the data in Europe will probably be capped at 20/25Gb per month depending on the network.

Thanks for the info. I am looking for data only, for our wifi unit, ideally with 30GB and top-upable when required. Hopefully our current mobile supplier may be able to supply a data only sim on a PAYG basis.
