Angles Mort signs

Our van is 3850Kg so requires the signs and is subject to other restrictions like speed and some urban streets.

In the past I have not worried too much about the speed limits on the motorway and the odd urban street with a < 3.5T sign.

I worry that with the signs on I will be advertising my weight and will not be able to get away with the odd incursion.

How would they know if my van was > 3.5T?

Also are some of the toll roads weight specific in their charging?

This applies to me too. On the rare occasion that we use the autoroute, the automatic booth usually charges us as a 3500Kg van. I too take no notice of the 3.5T sign. (In Slovenia the lady in the toll both was shouting vignette at me ... thinking that we were 3500Kg.)

So I have made up 2 magnetic Angles morts for the cab doors and a suction cup sign for the rear .... but I won't use them. If stopped I will plead stupidity and produce them and affix them. I really don't think it's very likely that many will be stopped UNLESS they are doing something else wrong. I do try to conform when driving in France! Honest guv!

As I've previously posted, is it really much of an imposition to sport the Angles Mort signs. In the event that you're unfortunate enough to have an accident with a cyclist you'd probably wish you had bothered. It's a safety issue. Penalty, possibly 30 years incarceration on Devils Island.

Putting things in perspective, not displaying UK disc, who cares, probably €135 fine at most.

All French autoroutes are weight specific in their charging structure, with the weight 'threshold' being 3.5 tonnes (3500kg).

To the best of my knowledge French autoroute 'toll booths' do not have equipment to confirm a vehicle's weight. - besides which it's the vehicle's GVW (MAM, MTPLM) that 'counts' fee-wise, not what the vehicle actually weighs when it arrives at the booth. (And, Yes, It's well known that a UK motorhome MIGHT be charged a Class 2 toll fee despite it having a GVW hugely exceeding 3500kg, three axles and a height well over 3 metres - but let's not explore that in this Angles Morts thread as it's been discussed here enough times in the past.)

The fee for dealing with a vehicle with a GVW over 3.5 tonnes (un poids lourd) that breaks down on an autoroute is apparently unregulated.

There is a bit on the ADAC website where it states that the only legal stickers are the lorry and bus ones and motorhomes are to use the bus ones. So if you have the unofficial motorhome graphic stickers you could be looking at a €135 fine.

There is also a grey area if you have bike racks obscuring the rear sticker.

ps. just out of interest; it mentions that 18% of German motorhomes are over 3.5t

Just out of interest, there are now some lorries here in Spain sporting Spanish Angles Mort stickers. I checked on line and they have been voluntary since the end of 2021 and the DGT here do not plan to make them compulsory at this time. However if they realize that there is money to be made? well then the rule may well sneak in!!
