Murder in the Alps

Anyone remember the murder of the Al-Hilli family on a remote country road near Annecy, France, where they were staying on holiday in 2012?

It still remains unsolved.

Channel 4 screened a three part doc about it, the final part last night which i've still to watch.

The French cyclist who was also found dead near the car, married to a wealthy heiress 16 years younger, Saads employment in aerospace engineering and satellite technology, Iqbal al-Hillis former life as 'Kelly' in the US, al-Hilli family feud between the brothers, Swiss bank account, the motorcyclist that passed someone further up the road at "excessive speed".....this case is an armchair sleuths nightmare and conspiracy theorists dream!

Saad's brother Zaid doesn't come out well at all as the family dispute over their inheritance he'd not told police about, yet it was common knowledge to all Saads friends. They were also two entirely different characters with Saad being very affable with lots of friends whilst Zaid was reserved and didn't socialise.

The retired ex-RAF cyclist Brit who was first on the scene literally a couple of minutes after found a little girl staggering around near the car, not until he got closer he saw she was soaked in blood, the cars engine still revving with the wheels spinning against a muddy bank. When he reached in to turn the ignition off he saw the carnage of three adults all shot in the head.

After the police arrived and cordoned off the road, and began searching the scene for evidence, it wasn't until they turned up at the campsite where the al-Hillis had been staying with their caravan and the site owner told them they had two children, the forensic team who had since arrived at the murder scene found their four year old daughter hiding in terror under her mothers skirt.

Since watching the final episode of this case last night i've come to the decision the actual target of the killing was French cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, who had almost an entire magazine of rounds pumped into him. The al-Hilli family were unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. That the family were Iraqi who fled Husseins regime, Saad's work in aeronautics and satellite tech, the family feud over inheritance etc etc, all fed the media with an endless supply of salacious CT's.

Unfortunately all that did was divert attention away from where the police should have been looking from the very beginning. Mollier lived with Claire Schutz, 16 years his junior and recently inherited the Schutz-Morange Pharmacy valued at over a million. She also had a young child with Mollier, but her family did not approve of the relationship.

On the day of the murder Mollier cycled past the British cyclist who was to stumble across the murder scene minutes later and he told police he notice Mollier was riding an expensive racing bike, something totally unsuited to that type of rough road. He thought it unusual as racing cyclists tend to be obsessed about caring for their bikes.

Mollier wouldn't normally cycle that road at all but it had been suggested to him by none other than Thierry Schutz, brother of Claire. That doesn't make him the killer.....but it does make him a person of interest in that he knew Mollier was going to cycle that road. He didn't know the al-Hilli family were also going to drive it, infact he had never heard of them.

The Schutz family have totally shut down forbidding journalists from any contact or communication.

The French police messed up a lot. First they never found the youngest daughter until well into the night after speaking to the campsite owner who told them they have two children, not one. Also they said both passports were missing because they weren't in the car, they'd checked. Then, days later they admitted they had found them.......in Mr al-Hillis jacket pocket.

As the British DCI charged with leading the case on this side said, "blunders like that leave you questioning how many more they made". He's retired now but remains convinced the primary target was Sylvain Mollier and I agree as the motive was crystal clear but the French police don't want to look there.....and the Schutz family have friends in high places.
