The zoo at Doue is fantastic, it is in an old quarry.

We have stayed at Concourson sur Layon a couple of times, its about 3 miles out of Doue on the Cholet road, you have a choice there, campsite owned by brits - Vallee des Vignes, an aire - right by the river, and a French Passion place at a vinyard right in town. they are all withing a few hundred yards of one another.

You could not wish for a nicer place, surrounded by vinyards and roses! As you drive past the 'rose garden' on the main road the smell is out of this world.

Brian Kirby - 2007-05-15 5:03 PM If you/they like romantic castles/stately homes, go down to the Loire valley.  Make your way to Chenonceaux;....

Agree 1 trillion percent Brian!  We visited Doue la Fontaine, next to Saumur, 3 years running with friends, and "lived" the region for a week each time.  Villages full of roses, the chateaux, cheap yet wonderful sparkling wines, troglodyte cave restaurants, markets and pink fizzy wine at 10 am.  The French in the Loire know how to live!  Some highlights...

Market day in Thouars

Catedral troglodyte restaurant in Doue la Fontaine - the home of the fouace

Rochemenier troglodyte village

Sparkling wine tasting in the Saumur wine houses

Chenonceaux

Drinking beer on the hill above Saumur, looking past the castle to city and the Loire.

The zoo at Doue la Fontaine - no kidding - one of the best I've seen.

Wine tasting all around the region, but most spectacularly, Monsieur Gazeau's "Rubis" at Domaine des Deux Arcs

Best croissants in France, imho.

Camping is available at Doue la Fontaine and Saumur, though I can't comment on the facilities having never actually used them (we have always used a friends farmhouse instead).

All true!  But my all time favourite is Talcy.  Its a bit in the sticks, a few kilometres NE of Blois, on the edge of the Beauce.  Small, and not overly grand, but it has the most amazing atmosphere, and not too many visitors - which helps.

You get the feeling no one has touched the interiors in 200 years, which seems quite possible.  It is just just very old, very pretty, quite original, and extraordinarily fragile feeling.  You somehow feel that if you sneezed, it would just disappear!

Absolute magic!

Pornic is lovely town - you can park at the station overnight - it's a skip from the tourist information centre - (ok then 25 yards - big skip0

follow the path along the harbour and past the chateau and further on a bit and you come to a lovely beach - bit of ww2 history on a plaque on the way!

We bought some souveniers in Pornic and the lady in the shop gift wrapped them beautifully for us.

enjoy your time away Michele, we go as you come back.

take care and have a safe journey.

Hi All,

The Loire Valley is great. Chenonceaux is probably the best chateaux, look out for the huge fish, also Chambord Chateau and there they have an equestrian centre and they put on a display, we missed it as we went on a Monday and I dont think the horses do Mondays. At Chenonceaux they allow motorhomes to stay overnight for free. We stayed at Cheverney(well just down the road cant remember the name of the place), chateau also there. If you like cycling with the kids there is plenty to explore, you can even cycle to Blois, that would wear the big people out, but from our experience you can never wear the children out. You can stay on the riverside in Blois, again free. On the way back we went to St Valery sur somme, you can cycle for miles and its flat. There is a very nice Aires there, a few euros. Its fairly close to Calais so not to far to drive.

Where ever you end up have a great time, I'm jealous as I will be at work.

Off to Brixham Devon on the 12th June.
