Hi

Please can someone give me some advice, we have just purchased a motorhome, and have a Garmin I3 sat nav - does anyone know where I can obtain a program for the I3 in relation to low bridges, so we can use it with motorhome and not have any worries!

Thanks

:-)

Hi I have had an I3 for over a year...it was my first foray into sat nav..I find that it usually work well I have even loaded speed camera data and motorhome parking and campsite details but did not know about low bridges!! this would be very good and I wouls be interested to find out more if anyone knows...even for other sat navs as I have a converter program for custom points.

While I am in no way denigrating the use of sat nav for identifying low bridges I do have to ask are they really such a problem? Surely every road that has a low bridge on it also has a warning notice at the start of that road, or am I missing something? Also, while I accept that there are a few bridges that are very low, I've never encountered one low enough to stop my motorhome, I think the lowest I've seen personally was 11'6", which I know is lower than some of the bigger European built motorhomes but it was in such a narrow road that I doubt you'd voluntarily take one down there anyway.

Thanks for your replies, as I said I've just started out on the whole motorhome and satnav so i'm new to it all, just thought it would make my life a little easier.

Champstar could you let me know where you got the motorhome sites and parks program.

Thanks again, and any help is appreciated,

If you google POI low bridges this will bring up sites that provide this information. I have yet to see a free one advertised because they are geared to lorry transport who have to pay for the service.

I agree with Dave that you are unlikely to come across this problem during touring on normal roads.

There is a book map of the UK on sale in W H Smiths which shows low bridges.

We've experienced low bridges - when tootling around a couple of years ago especially we were at one of the seaside resorts and trying to get down to the sea front which meant going under the railway which ran between the beach and the town. Only problem was the low bridges on nearly all of the roads leading down to the beach ... quite a few weren't marked until you were within 30 ft of them!!! In France we found the same problem, sometimes they are not marked until you're just about to go through them then have the fun of trying to turn round, unfortunately not all of them are on narrow streets.

I appreciate it's only a minor part of driving and motorhoming but I was surprised at how many bridges are 10ft or below:-

On recent trip to France, low petrol station forecourts where as much of a hazard as low bridges..

with a new hightop you really have to engage your brain...

What about the Jackfield bridge, Dave?

I followed a very large wagon of Polish origin all the way down to the bridge - he had come out of a factory unit in Broseley so didnt see the signs.

Bet he wished his Satnav had told him it was there!! *-)

True but then I've never been down there in a motorhome. I did see a foreign truck (Hungarian I think) last year at the bottom of Jiggers bank, he'd got all the way down to the bridge and when I saw him was reversing a 40 foot artic back up. For those of you who don't know Jigger's bank its about half a mile of twisty windy steep hill from the roundabout on the Ironbridge bypass down to Coalbrookdale but at the bottom of the hill is a railway bridge that's about 12'-13' high. Oh yeah, the road ain't wide enough to turn a 40 footer round either and its on a main bus route so its a busy road. Anybody fancy reversing 40 foot of artic up a seriously steep and bendy hill in a foreign country with buses and cars coming down it?

To be fair though it is signposted for a low bridge as you come off the roundabout.

D.
