BensGrandad
I have a 1978 Sherpa Highwayman but am finding it diffcult to get spares. Does anybody have any idea of where these may be obtained. It is very reliable but still needs odds and ends. At the moment I am trying to get a thermostat as I want to take it to Portugal in January and wish to ensure that it doesn't overheat. My brother in law, who maintains it assures me that it will make the distance ok provided I respect its age and don't try to get there in 24 hours. davenewellhome
Hi Brian and welcome to the forum, what engine do you have in your highwayman? If its the 2 litre "O" series lump then you could have a big problem getting a thermostat as they stopped making them years ago. Try your nearest Leyland truck dealer, I used to get the parts I needed for my Freight Rover from them. Hope you get what you need. D.
BensGrandad
It is 1700 O series engine that apparently has the same engine/ thermostat as the Marina did. I have tried the local LDV dealer and they have said that the thermostat for that engine is now obsolete. I was hoping that somebody would know of a dealer who specialises in old vehicles somewhere in another part of the country. I live in West Sussex. Dave Newell
I'd say your best bet is to trawl the internet for breakers that might have one in but you'll be lucky if you find one. I needed a thermostat for my O series Freight Rover (exactly the same on the 2 litre or 1.7) back in '99 and had to trawl breakers yards to get one as they stopped making them years ago. good luck in your searching. Globetrotter
You mean like this one ? You need to be quick though-only a day to go ! http://tinyurl.com/2m7vxs Also seems like these guys may have them: http://www.awegis.net/privateparts/
Globetrotter
One other possibility I just thought of. The Rover SD1 2000cc used the O series engine too. Their thermostats are definitely still available, so I wonder if it would be possible to use the complete housing assembly from an SD1 on the other engines? Just a thought, not sure if it is possible....

Globetrotter
Cheap too. The one on eBay didnt sell, so could have been bought for £3.50 including P+P !!
Basil
Hi, Globetrotter if you are sure it did not sell could BensGrandad not use the 'Contact' on Ebay under the sellers details to make contact and a sale? I have done this with some other things that have arrived at the end of listing and been unsold. Bas
Globetrotter
Yes he could, but as the auction has ended, this would need to be done via the auction link I gave earlier. It may even be relisted! As a stockist and seller of British classic car/van parts, I could have bought it and sold it on at twice the price, but that isnt my style. As I specialise in sourcing obsolete parts, I will however watch for these in the future as I had'nt realised they were so scarce.
davenewellhome
An even rarer part and one that is just as important is the thermostat housing. If you can get hold of any of them you're doing really well. D.
Globetrotter
Thanks Dave-I will have to look at the parts microfiches ! That is why I wondered if the complete assembly from an SD1 might work. By the way, the cruise control was worth every penny !!! :-D
davenewellhome
You're welcome John, glad the cruise is to your liking. I think the housing is different depending on the vehicle, i.e sherpa, marina, Rover SD1 but I'm not 100% certain. D.
