FranklyMy Dear
Cracked it! There is a plunger-type earth contact switch which is operated by the front edge of the bonnet when it's dropped. Except that it's not pushed down by the metal-work but somewhat bizarrely by the insulation mat on the underside! So if you do as I did and replace this mat with sound-deadening foam sheet tucked in to the bonnet cavities........!! A small aluminium plate riveted in place solved the problem & all is now tickety-boo. So if the thieves come sneaking round again in the small hours...but more of that anon. Many thanks to all replyers for your interest.

davenewellhome
Well done Frank and thanks for letting us know how you sorted the alarm problem. If you have to sort the sneaky boy issue it might be better if we don't get to hear about it 8-) :-D . D.
