Does anybody know anything about La Pagne or has stayed in the area over the winter time. The reason I would like to know is that our Daughter ,Son in law and Grand Children are staying in an apartment and are hoping to get some skiing in over Christmas. We would like to stay in the area with our van and see them for2 or 3 days. We then plan to travell south Spain/Portugal.

We are not keen on skiing and not keen on snow covered mountains, Is there a lot of snow there are the roads kept clear and are there aires in the area?

Hi,

There are two Aires in La Plagne one at Macot-La Plagne and another at Plagne Centre. You can look at the information on the very good french site, www.campingcar-infos.com

La Plagne is made up of 12 small areas linked by roads and of course ski-lifts. It is a large resort linked, when the cable car is working, to Les Arcs. In all French ski resorts there is always plenty to do for non skiers which is generally organised by the Tourist Office.

Christmas in the Alps can be very unsettled but last Christmas they had one of the best for a long time. The weather can be harsh at times with freezing temperatures at night and snowfall heavy at times. Snowchains are a legal requirement but can be hired. The roads are kept clear unless there is a very heavy snowfall so it is always important to check the weather forecast before going up to the resort. Roads are good as coaches and delivery lorries have to go up to the resorts as well.

You have time to research the above before next Christmas. There is always plenty of information on the resort website.

There is also plenty of good advise on the Forum from people who have used their 'van in the winter for skiing. Use the search facillity.

In winter expect to use 5kg of gas per week as it is important to your 'van warm all the time.

Hope this is of use to you.

Peter.

:-)

Thanks Peter very useful. We like using Aires but have just found a camp site Camping Eden about 10 minutes away down in the valley. We may stay there (waiting for prices but it has 10amps so should keep us warm) for a few nights so that we can spend Christmas with the family, then travell south (Spain) for some warmer weather

It may be worth looking into renting an Apartment in Plagne Centre for a few nights. If you book early you will obtain a good price. Travelling up and down the mountain in winter can be a bit risky as the weather may change. Also you will be near all the facillities. If your family stayed in Plagne Centre as well it will make it alot easier for everyone.

Peter.
