Partygate investigator helped shield No.10 from scrutiny over Grenfell

The top civil servant investigating parties at Downing Street has again been implicated in withholding information from public scrutiny – this time relating to the Grenfell Tower fire.

Documents uncovered today show Sue Gray was consulted over blocking a journalist's request for emails to and from Number 10 adviser Elizabeth Sanderson.

It comes after a campaigner warned that Gray, who has been appointed to oversee the party probe, is “not a person that believes in open and full disclosure”. In documents obtained by openDemocracy, Gray was seen urging officers not to respond to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request about the infected blood scandal, instead citing the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq war as an example of how to “releas[e] the information in a managed way”.

Flagged her previous dodgy actions in December

And still the Tories keep digging...

Sue Gray who will now carry out the investigation is known as the "most powerful person that you've never heard of". A civil servant who has regularly broken the law.

“Even when a document trail exists, Ms Gray is enthusiastic about keeping it a secret. We know that she advised special advisers on how to destroy email (by "double-deletion") to thwart FOIA requesters. She did not advise them on the requirements of the code on public record-keeping. We also know, via the Freedom of Information Act, that she kept no log of why, how or when she destroys documents (contrary to that guidance)."

How much longer do we have to suffer Johnson and his party of corruption and criminality to continue? There was a time in politics when ministers would have been booted out or resigned for much less than this.

Sue Grays "report" will be a laughable whitewash.

No 10 officials admit holding back information from partygate inquiry after being ‘frightened into silence’

Officials working in No 10 claim they have held back information from Sue Gray’s investigation into the partygate scandal due to a “culture of fear” surrounding the probe.

Three sources told The Independent they have not divulged messages and pictures on their phones after a senior member of staff told them to remove anything that could fuel speculation in the wake of the first party revelations.

Messages in a WhatsApp group were said to contain photographs of people drinking and dancing, as well as references to how hungover people were the next day.

The messages are from the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral, when there were two parties, one to mark the departure of a No 10 photographer and another to mark the departure of James Slack, Downing Street’s director of communications. Mr Slack has since made a public apology.

One source claimed that after being asked to remove information, they subsequently deleted evidence of that party.

They said they were also fearful that, having removed material, they could face censure: “I did the wrong thing and actually deleted stuff.”

“Everyone’s terrified. It’s a witch-hunt,” another source told The Independent. “There’s been a culture of fear [in the office] every day since the first party story broke.”

Lengthy article in the Torygraph on Partygate investigation

Number 10 police questioned by Sue Gray over Downing Street parties

Officers’ ‘extremely damning’ accounts of comings-and-goings in Westminster to form key part of civil servant’s report

Police officers who guard Downing Street have been interviewed by Sue Gray for the “partygate” investigation, The Telegraph can disclose.

Members of the Metropolitan Police’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command who were on duty when a string of lockdown-breaking gatherings are alleged to have taken place have provided detailed testimonies about what they witnessed.

The statements, described by one source as “extremely damning”, are expected to form a key part of Ms Gray’s report, which is due to be published within days.

The senior civil servant has also spoken to the Prime Minister, civil servants and political advisers, and accessed security pass logs and even Boris Johnson’s official diary.

Dominic Cummings, Mr Johnson’s former chief aide turned hostile adversary, will be interviewed by Ms Gray on Monday, according to reports.

Testing time for Tories ahead of report

Downing Street is bracing for the reaction from Tory MPs to the report, amid fears that a torrent of no confidence letters could be submitted if it lays blame at the feet of Mr Johnson.

Over the weekend, “Red Wall” Tory Aaron Bell, who was first elected MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme in 2019, became the latest rebel to hand in a letter to the 1922 committee chairman, according to reports.

On Monday, William Wragg, another staunch Conservative critic of the Prime Minister, will meet with the Met Police over allegations that Government whips have blackmailed and threatened backbenchers.

The Prime Minister is facing one of the most pivotal weeks of his premiership as he awaits Ms Gray’s report, which could prompt his own MPs to move against him.

He is expected to launch a clear-out of key Number 10 figures ensnared by the row, overhauling his top team of advisers and officials, in response to the probe.

Officers ‘only too willing’ to co-operate

Officers deployed to guard Downing Street would have a detailed knowledge of the comings and goings at Number 10 and would therefore be in a position to corroborate some of the most damning allegations that have emerged in recent weeks, such as whether a suitcase of alcohol was brought in to one event on the eve of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

They may also have been in a position to comment on the wider drinking culture in Downing Street during lockdown, and whether they issued any warnings to party attendees or officials.

Amid reports that some Number 10 staffers have been “circling the wagons” by holding back information from the Gray inquiry, and even deleting incriminating photographs and WhatsApp messages, the police officers are likely to be seen as impartial observers.

While police officers cannot be compelled to speak to Ms Gray – unlike Downing St staff – it is understood they were “only too willing” to co-operate.

One source said on Sunday night: “Met officers have spoken to Sue Gray now, as you would expect, and have been able to provide a lot of information.”

Asked how significant the material they had disclosed was, the source added: “Put it this way, if Boris Johnson is still Prime Minister by the end of the week, I’d be very surprised.”

Scotland Yard under the spotlight

Scotland Yard has come under fire for refusing to launch a criminal investigation into allegations of parties during lockdown.

However, sources have said that the officers on duty in Downing Street have “nothing to hide” and their testimony is beyond reproach.

A Scotland Yard spokesman would not be drawn on whether officers had been interviewed by Ms Gray, but added: “The Met has ongoing contact with the Cabinet Office in relation to this inquiry.”

On Tuesday, Dame Cressida Dick, the Met Police commissioner, is expected to be questioned about “partygate” when she makes her regular appearance at the London Assembly police and crime committee.

Once the report is published, there are likely to be fresh calls for the police to investigate any breaches of lockdown rules.

It was also confirmed on Sunday night that Ms Gray has had access to the system that records when staff use their swipe cards to enter and exit Downing Street.

A log of all visitors, and the names of those who sponsor their visit, are also retained on the same system.

Alleged parties in the flat that Mr Johnson shares above No 11 Downing Street with his wife, Carrie, and their family are also covered by Ms Gray’s probe, it has emerged.

As well as being able to describe the movements of people in and out of Number 10 on the dates in question, Scotland Yard officers might also be able to lift the lid on some of the goings-on inside the building.

It is believed that officers were called to investigate an incident at a Christmas party in Downing Street on Dec 18 2020, when a security alarm was accidentally triggered.

It is also thought they might be in a position to confirm crucial details about the event in the Downing Street garden on May 15 2021, such as what time it concluded and whether there was music and dancing.

Many Tory MPs have kept their silence over “partygate”, insisting they wanted to see Ms Gray’s findings before speaking out.

If Mr Johnson is found to have misled MPs with his remarks about drinks parties, questions will grow about his future in office.

The Ministerial Code states that a frontbencher should offer their resignation if they are found to have misled Parliament.

Dominic Raab last week conceded that deliberately lying to Parliament was “normally” a resigning matter, while Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, stressed that the Ministerial Code was “clear on these matters”.

The Deputy Prime Minister on Sunday signalled that No 10 may not publish all elements of the probe, although insisted all the “findings” will be made public. :-S

Mr Raab told the BBC that he was “not quite sure the shape and form it will come”, but said there would be “full transparency”.

Senior Conservatives have raised concerns that Downing Street could attempt to redact significant portions of the inquiry.

A Government source told The Telegraph that while the format of the final report remains unclear, it is not expected to put into the public domain all witness statements, WhatsApp messages, and granular details about the actions of individuals.

The Torygraph have done a "timeline" of Johnsons downfall so even they expect him to go now.

Good riddance.

Downfall of Boris Johnson’s popularity

September 7 2021

Boris Johnson raised taxes to their highest level since the Second World War, in a £36 billion move to reduce soaring NHS waiting lists and tackle the social care crisis. Despite abandoning two of his flagship manifesto pledges from the 2019 election to cover the new spending, only a handful of Tories rebelled.

September 15 2021

The Prime Minister shuffled his front bench, with Liz Truss appointed Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab demoted and Gavin Williamson sacked. The only bit of resistance came from Mr Raab, however, as he was given the title of Deputy Prime Minister to placate him, and overall the reshuffle was considered to have gone smoothly.

October 14 2021

The Tories raced to a 10-point lead against Labour following the party conference season. Despite a backdrop of queues outside petrol pumps, a YouGov poll showed Mr Johnson’s party climbed two points, with 41 per cent backing the Government in the event of a snap election, while Labour was flat on 31 per cent.

October 14 2021 (continued)

Mr Johnson’s personal ratings also remained strong, with 31 per cent saying he was a better candidate, while Sir Keir Starmer slipped one point to 25 per cent. This was despite the Prime Minister giving a party speech that contained just one policy announcement.

November 2021

Things took a turn for the worse while the focus should have been on the Cop26 conference, when Mr Johnson insisted that the UK was “not remotely corrupt” after his party was engulfed in a sleaze scandal over the Owen Paterson situation, accusations of cronyism and MPs’ second jobs.

December 7 2021

The Metropolitan Police announced that it was reviewing footage in which senior Downing Street officials joked about holding a Christmas party during lockdown, four days after the alleged event took place.

December 9 and 17 2021

On December 9, Lord Geidt of Croberg, Mr Johnson’s standards adviser, was on the brink of quitting following accusations that the Prime Minister misled him over the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat.

On December 17, the Tories lost the North Shropshire seat to the Liberal Democrats for the first time in 200 years.

January 10 2022

Mr Johnson emerged as one of more than 100 staff members invited to a “bring your own booze” party in the Downing Street garden at the height of lockdown, via an email sent by Martin Reynolds, his principal private secretary.

January 14 2022

Number 10 is forced to apologise to Buckingham Palace after The Telegraph revealed that two parties were held on the eve of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

Good riddance.

.

I wish I could say the same.

But I think he will hang on till he is forced out because he has no shame.

Hence he is still covering up evidence,

like the plot to have an investigative journalist beaten up,

and putting one of his stooges in charge of a so called inquiry

that he will ignore the parts of which don't suit him.

The Daily Mail seems to have realised Keir Starmer is more likely that Johnson to make £billionaires domiciled in Her Majesty's Tax havens pay tax - because he doesn't take free holidays from them like Johnson. So they have sacked their editor and gone back to supporting Johnson, running a smear campaign against the MP who changed to Labour.

Its very difficult when Johnson has been given a majority

Who can or should be able to over rule him when he has been elected and they haven't?

Since we have no constitution (so they can make it up to suit themselves as they go along)

When push comes to shove whoever controls the armed forces controls the country, and they swear allegience to the Queen, not Johnson or us.

So as far as I can see only the Queen could force him out, and he has bought her with a new Yacht.

... and besides she has more pressing matters to attend to like fighting the Guardian to keep Phillips will secret

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/22/court-of-appeal-to-hear-challenge-over-media-ban-from-prince-philips-will-court-case

as well as Prince Andrew etc

When the right wing media turn as the Torygraph have done, and to an extent the DM, the writing is on the wall and Johnson knows he's in deep mire.

His own party will turf him out as there's no chance they'd win an election with him as PM. Red wall voters have woken up and their MP's who couldn't believe their luck, will soon be finding out what it's like to live on UC's.

I'm just surprised he's still in Downing street tbh as he can get far more money outside of politics than in.

Doubt it - we don't know what kickbacks he is getting from Covid VIP lane, Bounceback Loans, free holidays with tax avoiders etc.

In any case his being PM for longer will make his inside knowlege and influence more valuble when he leaves - all the favours he can call in etc.

All those he has lavished with our money will owe him a lot.

Like the 'newspaper' owners domiciled in Her Majesty's Tax Havens he has kept any EU tax treaty out of through Brexit.

He seems to have a wardrobe of various uniforms so he can walk around those places once the photographers arrive.....I don't think they'd trust him with a trolley or hypodermic though.

Carrie still lodges at number 10 though theres no knowing which floozy her husband spent the night with. :-|

There aren't many who don't rake in a fortune from flogging their book and doing after dinner speeches, something Johnson would relish as he loves talking about himself and telling folk how brilliant he is. ;-)

ITV have been doing some sterling work assisting Sue Gray in compiling her Partygate dossier.

Carrie organised a birthday bash for hubby in the Cabinet room with cake and nosh supplied from M&S. So yet another party held during lockdown......and they'd invited 30 folks.

Why didn't the police at the gates call in and slap a £10,000 quid fine on all of 'em.........or were they asleep?

https://www.itv.com/news/2022-01-24/boris-johnson-had-birthday-bash-during-lockdown-itv-news-understands

It's even reported in Pelmets preferred source so it must be true. Even the woman who flogs over priced wallpaper was invited.

Johnson held lockdown BIRTHDAY PARTY in Downing Street complete with cake, M&S nibbles and singing: Carrie hosted bash for PM's 56th with 30 guests in No10's Cabinet Room when indoor gatherings were banned

Johnson was facing a new Partygate crisis tonight after it was revealed he attended an event with 30 guests in a Downing Street stateroom to celebrate his birthday in 2020 while such gatherings were banned under Covid rules.

In another huge blow to the Prime Minister's authority, ITV claims he attended a gathering organised by his wife Carrie in the Cabinet Room in No10 on June 19, to celebrate turning 56.

They are said to have celebrated his birthday after his return from a visit to a school in Hertfordshire, where he had posed with his arms outstretched with children to show the importance of social distancing.

The broadcaster claims guests included the interior designer Lulu Lytle, who was responsible for a six-figure revamp of the PM's official flat, who joined in with a chorus of happy birthday as the PM was presented with a cake.

LOL! This is the problem being a serial liar, Charlatan and crook in the public eye. As time goes on you will inevitably come unstuck as it all catches up with you, especially when there is an army of people with long memories who want to see him gone. Josephine's letter is more legible than his FFS!

5% of Labour voters want him to remain! (lol)

Thats almost as daft as the 5% of UKIP voters that wanted to remain in the EU.

I suppose its just possible a few are thinking tactically though and aren't as thick as UKIP voters. Maybe they think with Johnson still in power they will trounce the May elections. I suspect thats going to happen anyway now. Johnson will be praying for WW3 to save his own arse now.

There is talk of Sue Gray's report being issued to number ten tonight and Johnson making a statement tomorrow before PMQs.

Her involvement has sparked quite a bit of discussion in Ireland. She was a landlady of a pub in Newry in the 1980's - a bit of speculation that she was a security service asset at the time?

I came across a interesting Twitter thread:

"Adding to the intrigue is her involvement with Paul Staines aka Guido Fawkes who at the time was quite active in certain things some of which may have been of interest to both the police and local "businessmen", Staines left Ireland and travelled all over.....

Initially in London, he then found a job that sent him to Israel as a "journalist". No actual journalism background but had a Foreign Office accreditation. A brief time in Singapore, again as a "journalist".

Then back to london for a year, then Ireland where it all started to go wrong. Multiple arrests. A man easy to manipulate.

Numerous times in court there were intercessions from "UK officials " on his behalf but he could not stop being in trouble it is as if he knew he was protected. In the meantime he met his soon to become wife.

(I will be careful now). His wife is Orla Staines or Asling O'Leary or Ya ting... all have Irish passports. All the same person. They ended up in Hong Kong.

Her Dad died. They return to Ireland. Now we get to the arrests for dealing. That is when he ambled back to England being promoter of raves. (of course not involved in any form of ecstatic pursuits).

Then, by magic, (hello Sue) he found himself the killer of politicians or the maker of Kings.

(hello Sue).He then suddenly became a far right blogger. In all his life he was rather left wing until then.

And.. the circle is completed.2021

Paul Staines in No. 10 meeting , you guessed it... Sue Gray.

I will leave it here cos I don't want to get sued or shoot myself twice in the head or fall off a building.

tsk.. spooks and their creations."

And if this all sounds far fetched remember Paul Staines previously dated Carrie Antoinette!

It's in Pelmets comic so it must be true! I'm struggling with the vision of Smoggy turning up at one the parties, busting a few moves on the dance floor, before preaching his warped 17th century ideology. :-S

Since the Met declared their interest in investigating it seems to have hastened Grays report which i'm not sure is for the benefit of the country......more likely for Johnsons benefit.
