Ducato MJ130 P2299 error

We have had our 2013 Ducato from new and it has recently started throwing up a P2299 error. This says "accelerator brake feasibility". It first did this in April when going uphill, the ASR/ESP alarm came on and the van's computer slammed the brakes on. After stopping this cleared, but then repeated a few minutes later. The Fiat service agent said it was driver error - pressing both brake and accelerator together. My wife was driving, and she has over 40 years' experience. She wasn't braking at the time. The van has been in dock again this week for an unrelated warranty repair, and the ECU again has the same error, although without symptoms this time.

When I drive I habitually do heel and toe downchanges, and have never provoked this error. What I'm being told makes no sense. The automatic braking I'm told is a `safety feature'. How is it safe to take control away from the driver? If this is what it's designed to do then it's idiotic. Looking at the net there are very many vehicles which have the same ECU and firmware, and loads of people get this P2299 error.

Has anyone else here encountered this? Can I safely disable it because it's a very stupid and troublesome feature?

This is our second Ducato X250. Previous one was a 2007 Hymer, driven exactly as this one has been, and we never got the P2299 error.

Hello and welcome,

I have not seen this fault before but my guess would be that you must have a faulty brake switch. It is the only explanation for the ECU thinking that you are pressing the brake at the same time as the throttle. On older vehicles this would not be a huge problem but since the standard fitment of ESP; these things have to be bang on for everything to work properly together. It should not be an expensive part and i would just do it rather than waste a load of money on dealer diagnostics. Got to start somewhere!

Please let us know how this works out.

Regards

Nick

There are on-line references to the P2299 error code going back almost 10 years.

Evidently the P2299 code can be provoked by heel-and-toe braking, left-foot braking or conditioning new brake rotors/pads, practices that involve a driver deliberately operating a vehicle’s brakes and accelerator simultaneously. But clearly that’s not was happening when the Ducato’s brakes were spontaneously applied.

As checking simultaneous operation of brake-pedal and accelerator seems to be a basic feature of reasonably recent vehicles’ basic electronic control software I’m doubtful that it would be realistically practicable to ‘disable’ the code.

I can add a little bit -

Our Fiat X290 has just had to have a new Brake Light switch, the Van is a Comfortmatic and a fault with the switch caused the van to loose all powered drive which was most alarming when in the fast lane of the M6, also the red error light to come on at different times. Fortunately the brakes didn't come on and we could glide to the hard shoulder.

The van was put on an OBD scanner via the dealer who found a definite fault code detailing this (although I am not aware of the particular fault code number) The switch is wired into the ECU and does far more than just light up the rear. The dealer said it sends constant signals around the system including "am I braking" and if so "How firmly"

My concern is that I have very large feet (13's) - I was born that way - albeit smaller in the beginning however it's really easy to accidentally press both peddles at once with one foot, - the peddles are sited far too close together and I have inadvertently braked and accelerated at the same time more than once .... You have got me wondering........

Changing the switch has changed the characteristics of the van, - when slowing to a stop it feels as if it want to drive on a tiny bit and there is a jerk when it drops from second to first - or when first stops providing forward motion which I find annoying if not slightly dangerous, my dealer who has plenty of comformatics to compare is going to take it for a spin and see if I am being overly concerned or not, quite prepared after our severe fright to believe that I am but want an honest opinion

Thanks guys. I suspect we have a faulty sensor, as we ran the van for 2.5 years before the error code came up. But the Fiat dealers are useless and just recycle the same boilerplate statements from Fiat. Easier to blame the driver than to do a proper diagnosis. Impossible to get any advice from Fiat as they just bounce it back to the useless dealers.

I think we may have the answer. We got the service record from the garage and as well as resetting the P2299 error they said "Also B CAN missing U0019". This indicates a possible comms problem between ECU and ASR/ESP computer. If this is right, it explains why we haven't had the brakes slamming on since. They never mentioned this at the time and insisted that we didn't know how to drive.

How I yearn for the days when vehicles could be understood by their owners. They are now so complex that even the specialists can't understand them, so just give the most simplistic explanations.

When driving occasionally it may be necessary to dab the brake pedal to warn a driver/drivers behind.

This can cause the accelerator and the foot brake to operate at the same time...the result can be a sharp surprise.....similar to 'heel and toeing'!

When the van has been laid up for a few weeks and it's been damp the discs get a bit of surface rust on them.

I take it for a run and brake/accelerate at the same time to clean the discs (when safe to do so).

Having read this thread, I think I will refrain from doing this. Thanks guys for the heads-up

:-D
