Saga vs Safeguard

Following up my post earlier I've checked up with Fiat Camper Assistance (tortuous but free phone calls to Italy) and it is limited to breakdown of the vehicle only. My concern was if I was ill or injured so I couldn't drive while abroad, as my wife doesn't have a driving license they wouldn't supply a driver to get us and the van home.

I'm still investigating the breakdown insurance offered by Saga and Comfort

Hi 747 it was me Curly, just got off the phone from Saga and definitely NO to suspending the camper insurance if laid up at any time, the car yes I have used this for years, it was actually offered to me by the person on the other end of the line about 13-14 years ago.

As already mentioned when suspending the car insurance you are covered for fire and theft, they also insure scooters at a very good rate i.e. Piaggio 125 full comp. for £67.

Hi Curly,

That is strange because I was told the opposite. This same chap set up the insurance cover for my car and my wifes at the same time.

You have got me worried now. I had better check the policies in case he got that wrong as well. :D

IMO you should NEVER just have reduced cover if your car/motorhome/scooter or whatever vehicle, has any value. Third party fire and theft will not cover it if you accidentally damage it, or if it is damaged by others, either accidentally (ie visitors), or on purpose (vandalism). Unless you can tuck it away safe and secure so that no one can get to it, or cause any damage, there is always a risk of something happening ... a motorhome especially makes a nice big 'target' for idiots. The only time I'd have Third party fire and theft was if I had a 'banger' which was worth less than the excess on the policy!

Is the small saving really worth the worry???? :-S

Just rang both Saga and Safeguard and one important point to get clear is Safeguard Drivers Legal Protection cover is for UK and Europe ,but Saga Drivers Legal Protection covers only UK considering 75% of our travel is in Europe its worth the extra premium to Safeguard for peace of mind if we only used the MH in UK then Saga would win my renewal.

Hello Steve,

I investigated this exact situation with the AA breakdown policy provided with Safeguard Insurance.

The situation seems to be that they will NOT provide a driver if a qualified and able driver is a passenger in the vehicle. Also that they consider the provision of a driver as a concession that CAN be agreed not a right or contractual commitment under the terms of the policy. This type of cover would normally be provided by special travel and medical insurance.

An able driver is considered to be a qulified driver who is capable of driving the vehicle. In my case my disabled wife can drive but is not qualified due to now having a licence to drive only automatic vehicles, the van is manual.

In both cases with the AA and travel insurance (Able2travel in my case) they will consider paying for accomodation and travel for a relative to travel to where someone is ill and to drive the vehicle home. That person would of course have to be covered under the vehicle insurance policy and meet all the requirements for a named driver.

I can only suggest that reading the breakdown policy and then talking to the breakdown insurer about the "Get you home clauses" and getting their position in writing would be advisable. It seems from your posting that this is the route you are following.

Regards,

Mike.

Hi, I think I understand your point, but the Drivers Legal protection insurance is a separate purchase from either of the 2 companies you have named, and could be purchased from another source entirely.

Just thought everyone might be interested to know that Saga actually increased our premium when we informed them that our motorhome had gone into secure indoor storage for the winter. We have been with Saga for two years now and have been relatively happy although the price of the premium increased significantly on the second year. What has annoyed us this year is that when we moved house they put the charge up, when we changed number plates they put the charge up, and now we have put it in secure storage they have again put the charge up. They said that the premium is based on the postcode and that it does not matter whether the storage is CASSOA Gold, or whether it has 24 hour security - it just goes on the postcode and they said it was higher risk than just parked on our drive. The storage is quoted in MMM as the most secure indoor storage in the country!!

When we expected the premium to go down it actually went up and we are pretty sick of SAGA increasing their prices all the time.

Hi been with Saga for years and have yet to find anyone better because if you get a flier and is cheaper than Saga they will then match it.

:-)

Well I was with Saga and they increased my premium, no accidents, clean licence for 40 years. SO I got quotes from Caravan Guard and Safeguard, both were similar and far cheaper than Saga. I rang Saga and told them of my quotes and even who had quoted (totally up front). Saga told me that they DID NOT price match and I would be better off changing Companies. Which I did. Saga have also lost all of my other business. And yes the cover was equivalent on all policies.

Another strange point with saga the premium for husband and wife only driving is cheaper than if I insure for owner only driving by almost £50.

I can concur with this one as when my wife got an endorsment last year (first one since she got her licence many years ago) just around the time of renewal on my car, I advised SAGA of this and they charged £35 extra premium. When I asked what it would be without my wife on the car as she rarely drives it, the premium increase was £105!! So cheaper with a spouse with one endorsment than me on my own with a clean licence, I really wonder about insurance companies and their risk assessments.

Hi,

Saga have quoted me £332 (and I didn't get my free torch :'( ) including AA European breakdown ins.

Safeguard renewal was £378 and Comfort have come out best at £320 including RAC cover and I checked that it includes a driver if I'm incapacitated -they do a net policy so NCB isn't applied.

They all seem to have good prices for the first year don't they :-D

I have never, in 40 years of motoring, known a decrease in premium after notifying a change during the life of the policy, I think this may be because they charge an admin fee for recording the change.

Regarding one driver or driver & spouse, when I met my now husband, I was insured with a company that was supposed to specialise in female drivers and was given a very favourable quote; I then as a point of interest asked how much the renewal would be if I added him and it reduced by £25!

What I liked about the Saga (you can get a quote online) is their "modular" approach. With my previous insurers (Safeguard and Caravan Guard) you have to take on "extras" which you may not need. In my case it was the breakdown cover provided which duplicated what I already had through Fiat/AA. Caravan Guard added around £50 for this service (UK only) which they would/could not remove. You could add around £35 to extend the cover to Europe.

For Safeguard the cost is not quoted for their AA Europe/UK cover - but I guess it must be around £70-80.

Saga allow you to add/remove this and similar items.

Also online you can see the effect of increasing/decreasing excesses and restricting mileages (in 1000 mile increments).

I estimate that this has saved me around £60 on the Caravan Guard renewal quote and nearly £100 on Safeguard (even after their subsequent reduction in the premium attempting to match the competition).

On paper the Saga cover is at least as good as the other insurers, and in some respects better.

Of course the "proof of the pudding.." is what happens when you have to make a claim (Safeguard were first rate 6 years ago, but no recent claims touch wood).

Clive

PS

also saved a further £20 by phoning Saga and getting a quote for travel insurance (no compulsion to take it out). Same applies for any other insurance quote.

One point worth mentioning is that Safeguard are part of the Swinton Group & operate from the same offices as Scenic.

Scenic cover does not have all the bells & whistles of safeguard but it is still adequate it also includes Croatia our premium this year was £247 with 7000 mileage allowance £20 cheaper for 5000.

Scenic are one of the few companies that do not require any additional security for vans over 40k that was the main attraction for me, I don't want to have to fit a tracker, if it's nicked I don't want it back. (I assume Safeguard do not require addition security either but I'm not sure).
