whisturx
It appears that all the specialist motorhome insurers are insisting on a tracker system to be fitted to the ever increasing price of new vehicles. I changed vans in 2006 and Caravanguard insisted on a Tracker over £40 k so I moved to Comfort Insurance. I am in the process of changing to a new van and Comfort now require a Tracker over £55 k. Are there any insurance companies left that do not require a Tracker system ? I have found a company that will fit for £299 plus a one off payment of £232 which at least is better than an annual charge for the future of the van.But the standard alarm is additional to that. I was lead to believe that without the keys most new vans are virtually impossible to steal and a decent alarm protects the contents. So who needs a tracker ? yeti
It doesn't have to be driven away to be stolen. It could be taken on a low loader or suspended tow.

lennyhb
Try Scenic Insurance, last time I renewed no additional security required. They are part of the Swinton Group.
enodreven
Hi, Have you tried Safeguard especially if you want breakdown cover included. Sorry to go slightly off topic now, but its also worth noting that Scenic offer motorhome insurance without the breakdown cover even though they are from the same Swinton group as Safeguard. I only found this out after I had swapped from Safeguard to SAGA as i had taken my breakdown cover with ADAC as it covers all of my vehicles and Safeguard wouldn't quote without the breakdown cover included. lennyhb - 2009-12-08 6:45 PM Try Scenic Insurance, last time I renewed no additional security required. David Dwight
We have just been onto safeguard to change vehicles, we pick our new van up next week they never asked about tracker. Having given me a quote which was £100 more on the cost of present cover I said it was not good enough they then reduced it to £10 to cover admin. Keithl
Try Adrian Flux. They don't require a tracker or alarm to be fitted and also accept the manufacturers immobiliser if fitted. They advertise in MMM or google them. Keith.

lennyhb
If mine it gets nicked I don't want it back, it has bound to be damaged or not treated very well, repairs are not always a 100%. Far better to put the insurance money towards a new one.

Far better to put the insurance money towards a new one. That sounds very easy when you say it like that . Go through the performance of getting a reasonable payout, from an insurance company and you might change your oppinion. Thats after they have frightened you half to death with quotes like "your not covered for theft of keys". All your plans are ruined for months, you get next to nothing back on your contents if you have a tracker there is a good chance of getting it back within a couple of hours. Guest JudgeMental
if you have a tracker there is a good chance of getting it back within a couple of hours. Really........is the tracker capable of remotely shutting down the engine, setting of the alarm and hazard lights as well..... have you tried to get the police interested in a crime at all in this day and age *-)

whisturx
Many thanks for advice. Adrian Flux will not insure anything over £65k Saga insist on a Tracker above £ 60 k Caravan guard tracker needed above £40 k Only Safeguard will insure up to £100 k without tracker All require a Thatcham Category 1 alarm. So it looks like fit a Tracker and have a choice of insurance companies or insure with Safeguard for several years.
Brian Kirby
In which case, choose your tracker with care, and ask the insurer which type/make he wants. I suspect any old tracker won't do for all insurers, and some of the service suppliers have drifted off into the ether over the years, leaving their clients un-tracked but in ignorance their company has folded. Were you then to claim, I assume the insurer might start to quibble about failure to keep to the terms of the policy. Make sure that are satisfied with the one you propose fitting, and that the details are entered onto the proposal form - failure to disclose material facts etc! Same applies to alarms. whisturx
The tracker system I was quoted £299 for was a Trafficmaster Trackstar formerly RAC, fitted by Van Bitz of Taunton. There is a special offer of £237 for a one off charge instead of a continuous annual payment. Although they supply a Strikeback 800 which sends your mobile GPS position, speed, battery status and can allow remote engine shutdown for a one off cost of £399 . Yet this is not recognized by insurance companies as a "tracker"system !!!! No annual fee either. ,
Lord Raindrop
I doubt very much that many M/H’s are actually stolen. Surely this is just another way to extract cash from the user. One already pays a suitable insurance cost that covers the theft aspect. The only reason for additional anti theft devices is to defer any claims to the insurer. Clive
There have been several companies offering tracking devices and for the most part they were all well enginered. The weaknes unfortunately for some was the robustness of the companies and several have gone under thus rendering the installed equipent in customers vehicles useless as no one is tracking them anymore. So if you are required to fit such equipment then pick a market leader. I guess it boils down to Trafficmaster Trackstar formerly RAC then. But make sure you negotiate a good price wont you! C. Yes, Safeguard on my new 'van for this reason and also cheaper than other quotes - maybe due to loyalty discount as I have been with them for 7 years . Included breakkdown cover is Europe wide and has no weight / size restrictions. Note that they charge a £25 admin fee anytime you change anything on the policy. Otherwise customer service is first class - never had to claim though :)
enodreven
Hi, I'm not sure whether its only applicable to the values, but neither Safeguard nor SAGA required a alarm system on a £30k valued motorhome, they were both happy with the standard manufactures anti theft equipment e.g. a Fiat immobiliser.
