Rees
I am planning to buy a new digibox to receive FREEVIEW (in addition to SKY) in my van. I need a car power adapter to convert 12v IN down to 5v 1000mA OUT. Any suggestions as to where I might obtain this?

Regarding the OP are you sure you need 5v? Most satellite receivers if not 240v are 12v.
urbanracer
I have a tiny freeview adaptor that I thought was 12v but it 5v so I also need a 12v to 5v reducer I am going to look in Maplins.
Rees
Would you like to tell me the make/supplier of your small digibox using 5v? I may be able to tell you whereelse you can obtain an adapter more cheaply than Maplins.
dikyenfo
Perthaps an easier way to go if you dont want to construct your own [v. simple] is to buy Maplins tiny inverter that plugs into lighter and get a multi voltage ac to dc adapter to cover 3-12 volts. Just a thought.

Keithl
Hi Urbanracer, I had a thought that USB sockets deliver 5 v so found this on eBay, item number 190434579141 (sorry link won't work). There are loads of alternatives out there, just check the power output is sufficient as most are only 500 mA (0.5 A). Keith.
urbanracer
Just found 2 of those USB adapters one 500ma and one 650ma so need a lead usb to the small round power socket to connect into the freeview unit. Now I am thinking I have a few mobile phones and other adapters I will find them and check if any have the correct power output.

Ian I think you had better have another look iti is 230v to 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9 and 12v DC just as the OP required BUT before using any transformer type power adaptor just follow this link and read the full article about power chargers on pages 8, 9, and 10 http://www.esc.org.uk/pdfs/business-and-community/SwitchedOn-Issue-16.pdf Alf

The op clearly states "....need a car power adapter to convert 12v IN down to 5v 1000mA OUT. " -nothing about 230V!!! The unit "camperdude" references is for mains to a variety of voltages between 1.5 and 12V.
