Insurance please can you help.

I am trying to get insurance for my Motorhome and finding it VERY difficult to get any quotes.

I make, repair and restore stained glass windows and want to have insurance that will cover me driving to wherever I happen to be working; this means that I require commercial use.

As soon as I say this I get the reply “ We only cover recreational use “. Please can you recommend firms that you have found able to provide this type of insurance.

THANK YOU,

Jonathan

Welcome to the madhouse Jonathon!

My insurance knowledge is 20 years out of date now so I might be wrong but I will add my two penneth anyway as the basic principles of vehicle insurance still remain in force.

There are several issues here. One is using the van as you would a car for traveling - or commuting as they often now call it - to and from a place of work be it fixed or variable. Another is the carriage of goods. Another is use of the vehicle in connection with your own or your employers business which would normally be covered by what used to be known as 'Class A' car insurance.

Class B use used to be full business use including commercial travelling and carriage of goods which might also be available if you insure the van as a car - although I suspect that full Class A cover is what you really need?

It shouldn't be too hard to source a policy that allows you to commute to and from 'a place of work' as many people use their van as a car?

Carriage of goods may be a bit more tricky and you might have to carry this risk yourself which I suspect is not too much of an issue anyway but you might need to explain that to the insurer?

My own policy with Safeguard is specifically S D & P use even excluding commuting and I suspect most of the other specialist Motorhome cover providers will be the same.

Have you phoned all the usual suspects that come up when you google 'motorhome insurance'?

Next to try would be to try a proper insurance broker and if you are lucky enough to find one who does know what he is doing then they should be able to sort that for you.

Finally resort to commercial van insurance but, although legal, it probably would not be an ideal solution?

Please let us know how you get on.

I've had the same problem Jonathan - in my job, there's a BIG grey area about what activities are work and what are social!

CIS will cover for work, but only via their "commercial" department, which is expensive, as well as limiting the NCD to (from memory) about 40%.

I'm now with AXA via "Lifesure," they had no problem covering me and were comparable with providers who wouldn't do the "work" bit.

Hope that helps

You could try NFU they seem able to cover 'unusual' cases.

Bas

NFU cover our motorhome for business use, they were one of the very few who could provide cover and were the cheapest. Plus you get to deal direct with a local office, look up your nearest one here and give them a call: http://www.nfumutual.co.uk/local-offices/

Hi all,

Have just changed from comfort (EX. but no business use) to "Campton Insurance brokers" who cover you for using vehicle to get to work, carry certain equipment concerning your work and allow you to live in vehicle while working. Only other firm I found that covered all three options was "Caravanguard" but exceptionally dear.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP.

I have followed up EVERY suggestin and found that:

Campton Insurance brokers are really on the ball and although not the cheapest provide very good cover. They also answer queries very quickly.

Comfort were cheap, but the cover is not as good as Campton.

NFU will only cover me if they do my home AND trade insurance. They are also VERY expensive.

I am sorry to say that ALL the others really seemed to be out of their depth, if they give you a quote it is quite clear that they do not appear to be atall familiar with this area of insurance. I wonder fow they would handle a claim, and it is a bit late to find out.

Once again, thank you for all the leads.

Any Stained glass/ lead windows need repairing?

That's odd, they made no such stipulation when I took out cover with them, and the price was much the same as the non-business use cover from our previous insurer.
