DIY Towbar Fitting - Fiat Ducato X250 PVC

I am looking for experiences of DIY fitting a towbar to an X250 PVC fitted with rear parking sensors. Specifically which towbar make you used and what electrical connection ‘pack’ was used. The reason I am looking at DIY fit is that I am about to take delivery of such a van however am not prepared to pay the supplier the £800 they are asking for to fit a towbar. Robbery or what!

I have been informed that I need ‘specialist’ advice and fitting due to the van having factory fit rear parking sensors and that the electrical connections will be a nightmare as the van also uses the latest CANBUS technology.

I know I am perfectly capable of DIY fitting the towbar, I have fitted them in the past, but am concerned that the tow hitch will interfere with the rear parking sensors (I know the parking sensors will be of no use when I am towing!!!) and have never spliced towing electrics into a vehicle fitted with a CANBUS system before.

Take a supply directly from the battery and route it through a bypass relay. Make the connections from the bypass relay to lights on the camper using scotchloks. The towbar wiring is connected into the other end of the relay. That way you will completely bypass the canbus system.

You can obtain a TEB7AS 7 way universal bypass relay from www.towingelectrics.com It comes with a wiring diagram and instructions.

As always with this forum quick and informative answers. Thanks for the info. TEB7AS looks like the way to go. Also just found a website advertising towbar states as fitting to Ducato models WITH reversing sensors. Certainly not the ridiculous price the PVC supplier wants as well!!

Kevin,

A word of advice to prevent future problems, DO NOT USE Schotchlocks!!!

They partially cut the wires in the original harness potentially causing a hot spot and most importantly are not waterproof so over time will corrode and lose connection.

The only permanent route is to strip a short length of insulation from the original wire without cutting it, twist the new wire around the stripped area, solder the joint and then insulate with tape.

Keith.

I have an Elddis 130 on a Peugeot Boxer chassis build date for chassis May 2010,I have had a Witter towbar fitted, the chassis already had taped up near the rear a plug that the witter electric just pluged into.

So a plug and play system,If can have a look under your new van and see if its already got a spare plug.
