winter covers

Hi Macclad

You don't mention what Motorhome you have or make of Fridge.

I'm not sure about any covers for Ovens.

Certainly if you intend using the Motorhome during winter months, you will need the vent covers for the Fridge. There are varuious sizes available, depending on make of Fridge.

But this site may help you to determine which you require, (you will need to scroll down the page as ther are not sequential)

http://www.leisureshopdirect.com/default.aspx?shop=caravan&menu=home&searchtext=fridge winter vent cover&searchcriteria=Entire Store

Then you should be able to compare with a local Caravan / Motorhome dealer.

They are also useful to have if you store the Motorhome over winter.

Do you mean 'vent' covers ? They are meant to stop fridges from getting 'too cold' and freezing the contents, rather than stopping draughts ( but in saying that, i use them for that reason too !)

If all else fail you can take the vents off and put a layer of polythene (aka Asda carrier bag!) behind them as long as you leave a note on the worktop saying what you have done so that you don't light up next spring with the old bags still in place!

I wouldn't use any form of adhesive tape on the van sides as it can be hard to shift and can also discolour the paintwork.

Some types of ovens do have external vents in the walls at the back to get rid of heat produced by the oven. Our Rapido has one. Our present AutoTrail has a fan built into the oven system which means no vent is needed. There are only a very few types of vents used and the oven ones are the same as used on some fridges. Any good motorhome dealer who has an accessory shop will most likely stock the ones you need. I you do not know which one you need take your motorhome to said dealer and they will soon work out which one you need.

I would recommend fitting one to a cooker in the Winter. In our Rapido in cold windy weather a howling cold draft used to come in under the cooker.

I'm sorry to disagree but they DO NOT stop overcooling! The purpose of fridge vent covers is to allow the cooling circuit to function ambient temperatures below 8 deg C. The problem is that absorption fridges work by heat evaporating a gas inside the cooling circuit, the heat input is relatively small at around 100 watts (actually near the same power level on all three fuel modes) and in temperatures below 8 C this is just not enough to evaporate the cooling gas so the fridge won't work at all so you fit vent covers which allow the fridge to get a bit warmer and hey presto it works.

I seem to recall commenting on this before, maybe not in reply to you?

If you have draughts blowing throu around fridge it's not installed correctly IMO.

Not cheap considering they are just two pieces of plastic......but it was the best price I could find anywhere!

The Seller does them in white or cream.

We have just bought some Fridge Winter Covers for the vents on our Dometic fridge. We bought them from Dometic and they told us that it is not recommended to cover the vents unless the temperature drops below -8C.

When we had our habitation check, they said that the fridge was very sooty at the back and it was in need of a service. They said that when you drive along the vents suck in air and muck from the road/atmosphere.

I guess the best thing is to cover your inlet vent (the bottom one) when you are driving in dusty/muddy/wet conditions but take the covers off when you start your fridge when you are parked. If you can be bothered with doing that, then you should have an efficient fridge.

Do Not use the covers in the Summer as it will impede the efficiency of your fridge.

Hope this helps.

The above may simply be a typo, but if it isn't, you should note what Dave N posted above.

The recommended temperature for use is below +8 Degrees C, as evidenced by the attached extract from a Dometic manual.

Cheryl,

I'm sure the instruction book for our Dometic fridge said to use the covers below +8ºC not -8ºC.

I'll check later unless anyone else knows the correct temp.

Keith.

Edit. RH has now posted a piccy which clearly says +8ºC :-D
