Hi there, we are new to towing also. We had an A Frame fitted recently to our Toyota IQ by Armitage Trailers of Ferrybridge who provided excellent service and advice. They are also towbar fitters if you do not already have one. Once you have hitched a couple of times, it is a very simple, safe and effective way of towing.

Hi George

You'll get an awful lot of negative response re A frame towing from this forum, but it is a free country and we do still have freedom of choice, thank heavens. We recently had our KA fitted out by Towbars2Towcars, perhaps more expensive than some but you will end up with the latest electronic braking and a manageable A Frame re weight. There are a couple of other suppliers of the electronic braking systems, it really is worth serious consideration to end up with a system that is ahead of the game instead of old technology. Please don't believe the 'I don't know it's there' brigade, anyone who can put a car or anything else on behind and forget it wants shooting, and unless you are running a massive rig, you will know it's there on long uphill drags. Good luck with whichever fit you go for, the independance and convenience you gain is definately worth the effort. Merle  PS If you consider the trailer option, watch your towing limits

I don't understand the A frame haters? who are A framers hurting? or are the haters just jealous?

The ones who have been there, done that and know everything!

How do you think we go on? We tow a car with an A-frame or a Motorcycle on a trailer-we antagonise everybody! But at least we enjoy ourselves and our lifestyle so don't care!! :-D

Mike

Edit-PS ours is the Electronic version fitted by Towbars-2-towcars and would recommend this and them

The bike trailer has no brakes-but you know what bikers are like! :-D

Keep smiling, you're bound to upset someone that way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we have a burstner T615, and would like to tow

our peugeot 206, 1.4 petrol,

any suggestions as to the best towing options,

we are new to camping, thanks, anna marie,

First check the towing limit for your van. On many, this is quite restrictive and you may find that even the 206 is too heavy.

Second, what is the best option will depend on whether you intend towing the car outside the UK, and how you feel about the possibility of being fined and/or being instructed to decouple it from your van. If you intend travelling outside the UK with the car in tow, and are unhappy to risk fines or having to drive both vehicles separately, you would be better advised to look into trailers on which to carry the car. The obvious penalty is the added weight of the trailer, which I think is highly likely to put your 206 out of contention. If fairly relaxed about the risks as above, then flat towing the car with an A-frame, as others refer to above, offers the most attractive alternative to keeping the towed weight minimal.

Be a little cautious when checking weights. In the UK, AFAIK, you can argue that it is the actual weight of the car, as towed, or the actual weight of car plus trailer, that counts against your Gross Train Weight, and you can also take into account any difference between the actual laden weight of your van and its MAM, transferring any balance to the trailer. The exception is where a base vehicle manufacturer stipulates a maximum trailer weight, in which case this must not be exceeded.

However, if you tow abroad, you are likely to find such interpretation is not acceptable, and the trailer (if used), MAM, plus the MAM of the van, must not exceed the GTW, irrespective of the actual laden weight of either. The same will be likely to apply in the case of a flat towed car, although it seems this is less likely to be seized upon than the fact of flat towing in itself.

That is to say, it is not specifically the A-frame that creates the offence, it is the act of towing one road vehicle with another that is not a licenced recovery vehicle, however the towing is carried out, whether an A-frame, a rope, an old pair of braces, or whatever. However, put the vehicle on a trailer and, providing the weights are all in order, it becomes merely the trailer load, and so creates no legal problems abroad.

In all cases, carefully check the attitudes of your insurers, car, trailer if used, and van. Some will not accept either concept, some one, some another, and some both. The greatest problem generally seems to be insuring the car while it is being transported on a trailer.

George,

Is the Pug a Manual or an Auto?

If an Auto it is almost certain that you cannot tow it with an A-frame and a trailer will be your only option but, as said previously, watch your weights.

Keith.
