Bulletguy
On departing UK last month, this vehicle was in the same queue as me for the Ferry at Dover Port. The owner recently had it fitted out and was doing a 'shake down' run in preparation for shipping it out to tour Australia. See if anyone can guess the make. I was quite surprised. http://oi41.tinypic.com/2cp5383.jpg

Yes it's an ex-military Leyland Daf. Didn't have much time to chat with the owner so no idea of the interior fittings or how much the conversion cost. However his Road Tax was just £160 though the fuel consumption not so good!
Keithl
I'm certain that the owner has a blog running on the purchase and conversion of the aforesaid vehicle but unfortunately I can't remember the website address. I remember reading about building the roof rack and I'm sure it's the same vehicle. Perhaps Crinkly can help? Keith.
Zydeco Joe
Sure is different but not sure I want one or should I say afford to run one LOL.
euroserv
I want one! That's my kind of motorhome! I would have painted it a slightly more inspiring colour and doubt that sites in the UK would exactly welcome it's presence but it should be able to go anywhere. Sundowner
At a guess, either a British Leyland or a Bedford, (both ex military of course). That's two guesses! After another look, I'm veering towards British Leyland> I've now read the rest of the posts, and realise I'm a bit late with this post https://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/images/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif bri
pepe63xnotuse
OooH!..I do like the look of that! (..don't think the OH would be too keen though)... I used to work for the company (and was involved with installing and testing)these... http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/,26,/46131/Leyland_Daf_.htm Now THAT would be a demountable!...although I dare say it'd play havoc with your best bone china! nowtelse2do
Based on the Leyland-Daf Roadrunner, Super little truck with the Cummings engine and it was fast. Driven hard 12-13 mpg, Driven sensibly upto 17-18 mpg and I have seen that bettered on occasions. Dave
colin
Around bedfordshire we have maybe a different view of this vehicle. Leyland Daf tendered for the military contract with it, they under cut Bedford but in doing so bankrupted themselves.

Probably the last roll of the dice Colin, but it was a good little truck and the Bedford was outdated. Dave
crinklystarfish
Yup, LD T244, same as crinkly's. Details here: http://www.military-today.com/trucks/leyland_daf_t244.htm I know the owners of about a dozen that have been completed but don't know whose this one is. It looks like an Ed Perry build. Ed made a few before his business folded. There are currently several 'Ed made' trucks out on long term travels and they have been well proven in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Not to everyone's taste but they do allow travel to places otherwise unavailable to a motorhome which was my main motivation.

crinklystarfish
AO show was pretty good given that overlanding in the UK is not that massive. The Allrad show in Germany is where the really good stuff can be seen. Many YouTube clips show some truly eye-wateringly expensive stuff. is a random starter. Colin Leake
I met up with the owner of this unit on a caravan club site at chapel lane near Birmingham. It was the first day out for it and they were there for some final adjustments to some electronic equipment they had on board. I can confirm it was defiantly on a Layland chassis but was under the impression it was a brand new one. You are right in that next year they plan to work their way down to Australia and then tour Australia with it. I did not get a look inside as they were obviously working hard getting to grips with it and testing everything out. I do know that several specialist companies carried out the work to the owners specification. Fuel consumption was indeed heavy and the cruising speed was very slow but it certainly looked as if it would go virtually anywhere.
