Advice on Selling

We are currently in the process of trying to sell our motorhome that we've owned for the past nine years. The reason for the sale is that after several years of travelling in it, we purchased a permanent holiday home in Europe and the van has spent the majority of it's time at the home and it is no longer practical to keep.

We are looking to sell the van as quickly as possible to use the money to buy a new vehicle out in Europe to keep at the home where we spend a considerable amount of time. (the requirement of driving back to the UK for an MOT each year will be nice to get rid of)

Are there any particular places that are best to advertise such a vehicle for sale? I've emailed pictures and details to all the motorhome dealers I can find in Kent (where we live) and have so far had no replies so am now thinking of looking further or indeed advertising it to individuals.

If anyone could point me in the direction of a dealer in the South/ South East who would be prepared to look at it perhaps, it would be appreciated.

The van is currently stored in the Czech Republic but I will be driving it back to the UK next month so ideally would like to offload it whilst it is in the country.

(Apologies, other than buying the van nine years ago, I know very little about the motorhome market)

Hi, is this a genuine enquiry, or some form of con..van in foreign country?

firstly what is the van, left or rightanded, base vehicle, number of berths, weight, payload, age, manufacturer, registration number, mot up to date,..all needed to tempt any possible purchaser..

photos of course, and then buy mmm mag and look in ads at back as there are numerous ads for "we buy your van"..

get van back in UK then tour around the dealers..

Hi there, apologies this is a genuine enquiry, not some con! I wasn't sure the rules on selling here so I didn't want to post an advert as such, I was just looking for some guidance.

The van is a Rapido Le Randonneur 740F, left hand drive on a Fiat Ducato Maxi base. It is a 4 berth, one fixed bed in the rear. The van was first registered in 2001 and is on a Y registration plate (Y314 UGX) - It has a Fiat 2.8 JTD engine with 122,600km on the clock (76,000 miles?)

We purchased the van from Brownhills at Canterbury but they appear to have gone now? The MOT is due in June which is why it is coming back to the UK (a trip we've been making every year) but I don't plan to take it back out there this time.

It had a new interior and skylight in 2008 (also carried out by Brownhills at Canterbury) and a new exhaust system in 2013 (carried out by a Fiat garage in Czech Republic)

Like I say, I've sent a tonne of photos and details to dealers in Kent and have had no such luck in even getting a rough valuation.

The only thing wrong with the van is there is some damage to the fibreglass following a shunt two years ago and last years storms but it has had the essentials repaired and has passed two MOTs since then.

EBAY, quick and cheap..just watch out for scammer's!

can put ad up now, in advance. best bet is a private classified add. just say you will be back from Spain in X weeks and van will be available to view then :)

Thank you all for your comments, I am completely lost when it comes to motorhomes, we purchased one on a whim and have had it nearly 10 years.

I did consider eBay but I wasn't sure how the classified ads worked on there, having looked into it, it is a brilliant idea.

I already have it listed for free on Gumtree, I think I will wait until the end of the month and then list it on eBay and AutoTrader (and maybe a few specialist sites/magazines?) and then wait and see. I am flying out to pick it up on the 21st May, should be back in the UK first week of June.

Your Gumtree advert looks good and reads well - it would probably catch my attention were I looking for such a van.

Personally I'd prefer to see detailed photos of the damage included though without having to ask for them.

Thanks for the feedback Steve. I did consider that but with the site limited to 9 photos, I really wasn't sure what to put up and what not to.

I might take a look this evening and see if there is a better way to show it off.

  • 1 month later...

Apologies for digging up this old thread but I have recently started hitting as many places as possible to sell the van (including eBay following the advice on here)

One of the common replies I am getting from motorhome dealers in particular is "sorry, we aren't interested in left hand drive vehicles" - As I explained before I am very limited in my knowledge when it comes to motorhomes but I would have thought that the majority of motorhome owners in the UK (and especially the south east where I live) would take them over to Europe and left hand drive would be more sought after?

Does anyone know of any particular dealers who would be interested in taking a look or who specialise in left hand drive models? I am currently in Europe and the van will be back in the UK early next week in Kent. I am prepared to travel around a bit and show it off to anyone who may be interested.

Jeez....Stay away from dealers and there BS. LHD are very popular with many but not all. I and any on here i respect would not touch RHD with a barge pole....

Just advertise it all over the place at a good price....now the perfect time to sell

If I were in the market for a camper, LHD would be a bonus in my book ;-) ...............

The reason I was looking at dealers was because I wanted the quickest possible sale.

I listed it on Gumtree a while back and only got one email about it, I did consider the price was too high. I've listed it on eBay and although it has gained 500+ views in 2 days and 9 watchers, I still haven't had anyone contact me.

I have nowhere in the UK to park it off road and live in a residential area so when I come back I didn't want it sitting around for weeks.

How about one of those dealers who will sell on a commission basis, ie they have your van on their forecourt, and take a cut of any sale ;-) .............

Seems like a alternative to your storage problem (?) ...........

That would be the ideal solution but like I say, none of these dealers seem to want to touch a left hand drive, certainly the ones I've spoken to don't.

When we purchased the vehicle from Brownhills in 2005 they were selling it on commission for someone who had only owned it for nine months and six of those months it had sat on Brownhill's forecourt at Canterbury.

Have you got a copy of the MMM?.......As there always seems to be plenty of dealers advertising for vans in the back pages ;-) ..........

If no viewing price maybe not attractive enough.... plus with damage you may have problems.

You may be right, I've no idea of it's value if I am honest, the same model but a 2000 'W' reg was listed on eBay earlier this year for £18,995. I took the damage into consideration and dropped the price based on that figure as a starting point.

Sorry but if I were looking for a MH and saw your photos of the damage I wouldn't even bother any further with it, I'd look for one without damage.

Can you not get it repaired before offering for sale?

Keith.

Rear and roof damage..................you say merely cosmetic but any potential buyer with a little knowledge of motorhomes is going to see that, think 'damp' and that along with the damage is going to put off most buyers as it means potentially big money to rectify.  In addition your 'coming from abroad' will make buyers wary.

Best of luck but IMO you've got a bit of a job on your hands shifting it.

Thanks for the comments and input, it is certainly appreciated.

The damage to the rear is only the bumper, there is no damage to the body of the van, we've had some repairs carried out (like the replacement of the lights etc)

The damage to the roof is cracks in the outer shell but there doesn't appear to be any damage underneath.

As for 'coming from abroad', it is a motorhome, it has toured Europe, I didn't believe it having left the country to be a problem (the previous owner had it registered in Spain between 2001 and 2005 before being registered in the UK). I live in Kent, it is registered in the UK and has been MOT'd in the UK every year for the past 10 years, it is only overseas because I was storing it in our barn during the winter. :)

From what I can see in the pictures, would say the front roof pod is quite extensively damaged.

I would appear that the upper impact has created a significant stress crack further down, unless the impact was side on?

You are fortunate in one respect that it appears to be GRP, as opposed to ABS or Acrylic - and can therefore be repaired.

I would be surprised if you had not suffered some ingress, even if its only into the GRP substrate.

As it stands - plus with the bent awning rail, and rear light cluster damage, it appears an unattractive proposition. You would be far better spending £500/600 with a decent boat repairer and re-advertising the van. Even when repaired, I think 15k is pushing it........

It was more side on I suppose, a tree come down and one of the smaller branches hit the top corner of the van above the passenger door hence the damage on the roof and the crack above the door (thankfully the whole tree didn't come down on top of the van as it would have probably destroyed it)

I will start looking into the possibilities of repairs, the insurance won't cover it unfortunately.

I've no idea of it's value if I am honest,

Neither have we, because we don't know if there has been any damp penetration through those cracks. I believe in getting the bad news out of the way first, worst case scenario the value could be nil - link http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Coachbuilt-Motorhome-Costruction/37800/

But I don't think you can gauge the level of interest until the van is here and MOT tested - why would anyone wait for yours to arrive when there are plenty to choose from available now?
