Medical for D2 Licence

Recommended Posts

Just had my medical so that I keep my D2 licence (age 70 or over). This is now good for another 3 years. I already knew I could get it cheaper than what my own doctor charges, being an ex HGV licence holder. Just out of curiosity I enquired what my doctor's charges would be, £105.

I'm a member of a HGV Truck Drivers forum so had a look on there which gave a few comparisons, some were cheaper than the one I chose but I would have had a lot further to travel. So this is who I'm recommending for those of you who might be needing to keep your D2 licence. The company has examination places over a large part of the UK and their charges are £51 inc vat and they also give a donation of £5 of the fee to Caring for Life which is a young people's charity for every medical they do.

So obviously I have no connection with this company only that I was a very satisfied customer.

Sorry if there's a bit of confusion here. The licence in question is your C1E, the D2 is the application form you require.

How soon before your 70th birthday do you need to start the process?

You don't have to do anything. DVLA will automatically send you a reminder about 2 - 3 months before your 70th birthday.

Dave

PS. It may be a good idea though to contact them if you think you will be out of the country for any length of time coming up to your 70th.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. I was about to book an a 40 minute appointment with my GP for next month for the 70+ medical. I've held my licence for nearly 53 years and I'm bugg***d if I'm going to lose it now.

I'm 70 in November and can take the medical unto 3 month prior, hence August. Want it done ASAP as I was going to upgrade to a larger 5 tonne MH but decided to wait until I passed the medical first.

I surprised myself with being sensible for a change, with my last 12 months of illnesses there is no guarantee I would pass.

We still have not been out in the MH for over a year now, but getting stronger each week so 'hope' is still the main feeling at the moment. Only 4 hospital appointments next week and 2 the following one!!

As I'm the only driver, it has to be me that gets better. Its very frustrating reading all the travel comments on the forum not knowing when we can get out, still keeps me interested in my 'downtimes' though.

70th birthday, 28th October. Had medical done in June. Made application on 28th July and still waiting. Despite numerous emails, all with automated replies and a lengthy phone call, getting nowhere. Leaving for Spain on Monday and doubt if I will have licence by then.

Fortunately after my licence runs out I will be static in Benidorm and will only have one trip to Alicante airport to park MH and fly home.

Having thought I was on top of it I am left high and dry. Why should it take so long for this department to process such a simple matter?

Don't worry about it Hamish, once the dvla have the application it's logged down and you are OK to drive even if the licence has run out of date. I didn't get mine back until a month after my 70th and that' when the new one Start's, so I've gained a month.

If you want to speak to a human at the dvla then ring this number. 01792 782764

Thanks Dave. I am not unduly concerned although the thought of trying to explain to a Spanish policeman would be daunting.

I had telephone but got nowhere and it is now too late in the day. I daily go on to their web site to see if any change in my licence but no luck.

My main gripe is how inefficient they are.

I used to have to do the medical for my Private Hire licence until I retired last year, and having paid for the medical by my GP, and done the eye test, I was also required to undergo a stress test both times. This was because I've had heart trouble, twenty years ago. The first time it cost me £250 and the second time it cost £650.

I could fill this post with expletives but will not. Applied for licence 26th July along with completed medical with birthdate 28th October. Sent numerous emails to a robot and even tried a phone call. Licence has not been renewed and referencing DVLA website my licence has expired. Have sent an email asking if my licence is valid and if I wished to hire a car how would it work?

Is DVLA that incompetent?

Message, Do not assume DVLA are efficient as that is not the case.

Have sent a complaint but doubt if that will help in the slightest.

Can I drive??

Checked DVLA website this morning. All my entitlements have been deleted and my licence cancelled. Thankfully I do not need to drive until 21st November and it should be resolved by then??? It just proves that no matter what you do to plan ahead it can fail. I would just say they are incompetent.

Having taken time to read the robots reply I can still drive although my confidence it explaining to Spanish police would be nil

"Can I drive?

There is a provision in the law, under Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act, which could allow you to continue driving, as long as you are able to satisfy all of the following criteria:

• DVLA is in receipt of a valid application, which is less than 1 year old

• you’ve held a GB/EU driving licence previously

• you’re not currently revoked/refused for medical reasons

• you’re not currently disqualified by a court

• you were not disqualified as a high risk offender on or after 1st June 2013

• you drive under the conditions of the licence applied for (e.g. provisional categories/entitlements, where a provisional licence was held)

• you would not be refused a licence for medical reasons

Hi

Just had my form from the DVLA this morning, birthday on 25 Jan, so I guess it's 3 months in advance they send them out..

Why such a vast array of costs for the medicals ?. What do they check please,,,

The cost is what your doctor can charge, so the nearer you are to Harley St the more they charge, in other words they can charge whatever they think they can get away with I suppose.

The main things they check after you answer their questions about your health is....Eyesight, Heart, Blood pressure and Reflex which is the best one of all.....they show you a copy of an old Pirelli Calendar ;-)

I seem to remember that the above is the case if you are driving in the UK but does not apply abroad. I could be wrong but it's worth checking.

This was the response DVLA gave

"You may need to discuss your options with Spain's Licensing Authority and possibly your doctor."

Having told them I was in Spain consulting my doctor is out the question and discuss with Spain's LA when my Spanish extends to "cerveza grande" would not see me far

Just totally disappointed with responses

Most recent reply from DVLA was that due to Internet security we can tell you nothing, other than we sent you a letter recently. Anyway, used Skype today, from Spain, and got a very helpful man at DVLA who indicated "there has been big changes " and I have to get an ECG test which will organise for my return, he even gave me doctors name and telephone number who is the heart specialists at my local hospital, so no big deal as one done recently was ok.

I suspect that due to the dreadful bin lorry incident in Glasgow DVLA have got the wind up and us old godgers will be under closer scrutiny, which can't be a bad thing.

Will now enjoy sun and sangria for the next few weeks

Returned from Spain to find DVLA letter which requires me to have an exercise ECG to determine my fitness to drive "Group 2 (lorry or bus)". Cannot find any reference to this group and anyway I only require C1 entitlement.

Any ideas?

Are they on about taking a ecg test,,,,
