Why is everybody pretending to be surprised motorcycle makers have been for years building in a flat spot at the exact engine speed for noise testing so that they pass. Car economy tests are done in a laboratory and have never been close to real road driving it's all computer generated. John (?) *-)

So what is new about porkies coming from big business especially the "white shoe brigade" from the auto industry. Having said that possibly the Obama fuel targets set in 2012 of around 52 mpg for a fleet brand average was demanding too much from the auto makers.possibly this current bout of claimed deception was the start of their way of meeting the mpg targets which. I assume would mean much cleaner engine discharge. Cheers Gary

From my reading of the two corporate cons so far, is it appears to me that MPG costs will actually increase if the software was permanently on (lol) ............

What a surprise.

ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

;-)

What was even more surprising was this bit ;-) ..............

"We found small city diesel cars are emitting more than double-decker buses or fully laden 40-ton articulated lorries."...............

8-)

So perhaps...........

NOXxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Would be more accurate :D ....

Yes - but

... next week another group of experts will come along to ' confirm ' that all the other tests so far have been grossly inaccurate - and will even be able to prove that the panting breathing of 100 cyclists is more toxic than the emissions from a Jumbo Jet

( when it's foggy ).

It's just a question of who you decide to believe.

In my case - that's nobody.

Back to sleep.... zzzzzzz

VW/Audi have admitted specifically installing software which is intended to detect when a vehicle is being tested and then change the settings to enable the vehicle to achieve to emissions readings required for homologation purposes, and then revert to it's normal settings when being driven normally, which presumably gives better fuel consumption or performance. No other manufacturer has admitted this yet, and none has been accused of so doing.

Surely, we all know that the official performance and consumption figures in the brochure are achieved only by driving and preparing the car in the way that no right-minded motorist would want to, but the point is, you could. That's the difference. We know they all do it, so we can work it out, if manufacturer A says his car does 40 mpg and B says his does 60 mpg, we know they are both trying to kid us, and we also know that B has better fuel consumption than A, but it is a more or less level playing field, so we make our choices.

What VAG has done is to set out to deceive not, not just their customers in the customary manner, but to deceive the licencing authorities who are required by international law to clean up diesel emissions or face huge penalties, and who have given the unlucky punters tax breaks etc., based on this deception. This scam has cost governments across Europe and who knows where else, a lot of money, and has possibly jeopardised their plans for meeting their clean air targets, and so far only VAG has been accused.

I really can't think of a way of dealing with the perpetrators, resignations and sackings will be no more than a tiresome event for the senior managers involved, and generous payoffs will ease the pain until they are offered a new, well paid job with another firm. Fines against the company will merely reduce their tax bill or increase the price of the cars, or both, and whilst lengthy prison terms for senior managers who indulge in this form of fraud seem really desirable to me, it is likely that the politicians who might pass such legislation will one day be looking for the non executive directorships to ease their retirement, and will not wish to upset the world of big business.

Heaven only knows how they will sort this one out.

Roll up.....Roll up, Buy now while stocks last, great discounts :-D

If a Telegraph article is to be believed, existing UK Registered VAG cars will be able to carry on as they are now and owners can't be compelled to have them 'fixed'. It seems, that far from these cars suffering reduced value on re-sale, they are going to become highly sought after and command a premium.

A 3 year old Audi A6 a neighbor bought a couple of weeks ago is suddenly looking like a very good buy!!!

Look on the bright side. If VAG owners (now well over 1,500,000 million) have been getting a 1/4 less mpg than what they were led to believe.....that means the exchequer have been gaining in extra fuel duty paid, and still are.

Looks like VW has done the exchequer a favour.
