PJay
Hi and welcome. Have a shop around for insurance, as so many factors are involved. Age/Where kept etc. Usually european breakdown cover is included. If a new van. don't you get free breakdown cover for the first year. or more? There are plenty of companies specialising in Motor Homes, just do a google search Big trip for first journey to South France. Best of luck PJay
sshortcircuit
I have used Comfort and so far OK but shop around. Your first trip looks a good distance to travel hopefully for at least two weeks on the Med. In July you will find the Med very busy, very hot and very expensive. Suggest you book your site. Tall_Mike
Hi, Funnily enough, just insured our new van today - hope it's not like boating "the best days of boat ownership are the day you bought it and the day you sold it". We shopped around a lot, - surprisingly the Camping Club Insurance wasn't the best value by a margin. Tried "Go Compare", my car broker, my insurance company for the car, and one recommended by the dealership plus a couple from the magazines. In the end the Insurance company recommended by the dealership seemed best for us, - although it wasn't the cheapest and they wouldn't unpack the breakdown cover, - we don't need it as it comes with the van for a year or 2. Went for an initial 7000 miles a year, not sure how this will work out, plus a larger excess which keeps the cost down, - We haven't needed to fit a tracker although would get a discount if we did. The benefits are that they would insure my 22 year old step daughter to drive it without a massive extra fee (£173 on top) she has 4 years Car no claims, - Other companies have refused to insure anyone under 25. She will not be the main driver in any way but as my wife is disabled and is sometimes hospitalised, - she will legally be able to move our van, collect it, park it etc if my wife or I cannot. Full European cover within the EU, can just go anytime, Hotel Accommodation if it breaks down (or hire car) - not brilliant, might need to be a budget hotel but better than nothing for sure, cover for our TV etc if someone nicks or trashes it, £100 excess on Windscreen which I suspect could be very costly if it cracks or breaks, (it's large) and so on. Overall - for first time motorhomer,s - not as bad as it could be although we are the wrong side of 50 with spotless licences and no convictions, the van isn't our main vehicle I think each company looks at your requirements and comes up with a different answer, it's a smaller, more technical, and a more specialised market than for example Car insurance, get on the phone, it's a bit tedious and time consuming, but it pays in the end. Colin Leake
Do keep on top of them regarding the delivery date. I've no idea how good in this respect your manufacturer is but some have a slight tendency to be a litle on the optimistic side delivery date wise. Badgering them early could help!! I'd also be enclined to have a short shake down stay in the UK before setting off so that any problems can be identified and sorted out before you go. Believe me there will be some, there always are. Good luck and enjoy your new motorhome like what most of the rest of us do.

Brian Kirby
smyth885 - 2016-01-02 7:00 AM Hi all New on here we have just ordered our new motor home at the nec A pilote 740c sensation I am looking for advise on insurance & European breakdown cover. Delivery due in March & first trip booked to st tropez July And advise would be helpful My suggestion would be to get quotes from three or so insurers, and to ask them for copies of their policy booklets with the quotes. Then, read the policy booklets, and compare what each offers. Anyone who says they won't supply the policy booklet until you buy the policy (on the unhelpful basis that you have 14 days within which to cancel) I would not pursue further. Not an attitude I would find enticing! Re the manufacturer's breakdown cover, you really need to get a copy to read. I'm not sure they cover the same items as the insurers provide. For instance, I don't think they'd cover the circumstance where the only driver was incapacitated and provide a relief driver to take the van home. If you are both to be named drivers, do be certain that you will both be happy driving a) the van, and b) on the continent. If two people are named to drive and one cannot, for whatever reason, the other is expected to do so, with a possible exception surrounding serious illness and long term hospitalisation with eventual repatriation by air. All very unlikely - though it does happen - but perhaps not the best time to discover the second driver has to single-hand the vehicle back home! RogerC
In addition to the foregoing comments I would highly recommend actually 'speaking' with someone rather than relying on internet comparisons or web sites. You might find that 'talking' will give you the exact cover you want/need and be good on price. I find Caravan Guard to be excellent in that respect. artheytrate
I have my European ins free with Safeguard, and last year travelling through France in our new Auto Sleeper coach built we were hit in the side by a French driver, when we got back home after our 7 weeks holiday, our van went straight back to Auto Sleeper and safeguard paid up no quibble. Just renewed and paid no extra as we had protected no claims. John.

fesspark
Just a line to say how lucky you were, I have 9 years protected NCB and a van knocked my mirror off, didn,t stop I paid the first £100 and my ins axa through the caravan club have doubled my premium for this year, however they have found another cheaper option for me but still £90.00 more than last year,i have had 58 years without an insurance claim, fesspark. Don636
We use Comfort insurance as this was by far the least expensive for us with good cover. Comfort. Have been the Which best Motorhome insurer for at least the last three years so well worth a look.

Keithl
And a tip to possibly save some money - Join a Club! Most (some?) insurance companies will offer a discount if you are a member of an appropriate club, eg CC, C&CC, specific Owners Club, etc... Keith. Dave225
I must admit that when I first read this Post I assumed it was a bit of a 'wind up'. After all who would spend upwards of £50000 on a new motorhome and not do some checking. Plus who would wish to go to St Tropez for a 1st trip in July? I agree with one poster who stated that the delivery date may slide. My neighbour has been quoted a May delivery for a van ordered in October last year and was advised that even the base vehicle had a 4 month lag time for delivery before they could even start. However, I stand corrected and can put hand on heart and state that after buying a caravan in 1976 for the 1st time we went to southern Germany for the 1st trip as the UK was raining as usual. 2 very young kids, about £50 in the pocket as that was all we were allowed to take out of the UK and had a ball. Towcar was a Ford Capri GT so totally impractical as a tug and I never even looked at matching weights. So, as for following the correct procedures?? No chance. However, I would suggest the OP does make a few shakedown trips before embarking on an overseas one, and maybe the St Tropez idea at that time of year should be adjusted. Of course if he/she knows a few billionaires then no need for the motorhome, just fly in and sip champagne on the yacht.
fesspark
Had a quote from LV, but I questioned the overnight accom;and vehicle, travel costs and they have just replied saying that this is not covered and advise me to use a specialist motorhome insurer, I would check your policy details unless it does not bother you as to what you are covered for
