Poland Road Tolls

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit confused, but don't want to be subject to a hefty fine.

AFAICT, if I'm less than 3.5t, I pay tolls at a toll booth and do not need a VIA Toll box .

My 2001 Hymer B654 reads Max Weight 3500 on it's NL registration, but the plate on the Hymer has significantly greater weights indicated.

Any direct experience or sage advice?

Couldn't get a pic to insert, but here's:

The Hymer plate

And the Dutch registration:

I found a thread on exactly the same question ironically with the identical model of van too, and it looks like your max is 4150kg which puts you over the 3500kg so you will need to pay if you use the motorway. I've traveled in Poland many times and must admit have only used one of the motorways once as most of their main roads are excellent and also the country roads are a delight to trundle along and get time to see the place. Here is the thread i found; http://forums.motorhomefacts.com/49-tech-mech-chat/42889-hymer-b564-gross-weight-london-emission-zone.htmlPoland toll site; https://www.gddkia.gov.pl/en/1126/motorway-tollsEdit; There seems some disagreement on that thread as to which figure is which and your actual weight appears for some reason to have been painted (or felt penned?) out. Is it possible to clean that off? Alternatively take it to a weighbridge.

We went to Poland July 16 in our Bessacar and the V5 stated that it was 3.85t so we had to buy VIA toll box. Which is not a simple or quick process (had to have a truck driver to interpret as they only speak Polish at the booth) If your vehicle documentation states you are under 3.5t you DO NOT net the VIA box.

We enjoyed Poland and thanks to all the Polish people we met (except the Toll Booth lady)

Thanks bulletguy & job & Boyce-

The only blackouts I did were serial numbers ,names & addresses.

I think my model can be "upgraded" to a greater weight.

It's licensed in NL as max 3.5t - anything over requires a different driver's license.

Reading the MF thread is confusing, because the sum of the 2 axle weights (3150)is what the Dutch deem as curb weight, with curb + cargo being 3.5t. However the Hymer plate indicates 4t for curb + cargo; 5t if towing (!!??)

I tend to avoid motorways as well, but I've read that in Poland there are several non-motorway roads subject to tolls if you are over 3.5t.

And you can find that you only discover this as the fine is being written.

If they go by the weight specified in the registration, then I should be fine.

You can always check when there just to be 100%. There are only five motorway sections which are tolled and being Poland, prices are mega cheap. Enjoy the country.......and the people are great too!

Out of interest how do they know that your van is plated over 3500kg?

Obviously if you are stopped, they can read the V5 or plate, or if you have a huge vehicle/tag axles it is pretty obvious.

A couple of vans I am looking at are over 3500kg but don't look any bigger/heavier than lighter vans - is there a central database that links with speed cameras/toll booths?

UK speed limits are also lower (except on motorways) if you are over 3.5t - are average speed cameras linked to a database with your weight, and how do the police know in their patrol car? I guess that if you are being silly and they WANT to pull you over, they can search the numberplate - if you are keeping with the flow of traffic, say 65-70mph on a dual carriageway, are they really going to search for every motorhomes weight? (just curious, not that I would wish to drive so fast.)

Hammer,

Sorry but that information is wrong! The break point for lower speed limits is if your UNLADEN weight is above 3,050 kg. Note that is three thousand and fifty kg and NOT 3.5 tonnes.

Keith.

Edit to add that speed limits on mainland Europe do vary if GVW is over 3.5 tonnes unlike UK.

Ok, so how do they know that your unladen weight is below 3050Kg without stopping the vehicle?

Is unladen weight the MIRO less driver (75Kg) less a tank of fuel?

It is like the age old question of 'How long is a piece of string'!

The definition of MIRO varies from manufacturer to manufacturer so cannot safely be used. Also manufacturers figures often have an error of +/- 5% so again it would be impossible to use them. If you where stopped it would be your word against the polices as I do not believe they could make you 'empty' your MH to weigh it.

I have a 'calculated' unladen weight for our MH based on brochure figures plus/minus added items and items removed (eg TV aerial) and a police officer would be hard pushed to argue against my evidence if stopped at the side of the road, well that's what I am hoping!

Keith.

PS 3,050 kg was originally 3 IMPERIAL tons and hence this law is now rather old and outdated.
