Hi all, can anyone tell me the cost of having a new clutch fitted on a autotrail Fiat Ducatto 2009 3000cc 160multijet 20000 miles. broke down yesterday and had to be recovered and towed home the mechanic told me he was 99.9% sure that the clutch had gone completely and will need a new one, I have no idea of the cost to replace this so I am asking for some round about figures. and has anybody got the name of a good garage that is fairly priced in the chesterfield or Derbyshire area. thanks.

Edited your title to help others (Keithl).

I've never heard of a clutch suddenly failing but maybe they do sometimes. Usually you get plenty of warning when it starts slipping on inclines.

The basic cost of a complete clutch and flywheel assembly including slave cylinder is £500+. Add labour of say £800+ and you end up with around £1500 as a ball-park figure.

Perhaps the slave cylinder has failed or the hydraulics which operate it. Unfortunately, the slave cylinder is contained in the bell housing where the clutch and flywheel are located.

Best of luck but suggest you get a second opinion first before spending loads of dosh.

PS. The 3 litre engine has a fairly high reverse gear, have you noticed any juddering when reversing? If so, it may have had an adverse effect on the gearbox. Hopefully not, as that could be even more expensive.

Graham,

Try contacting Nick Fisher (euroserv) as he runs a van hire business in Leicester so not too far away from you.

If you search 'euroserv' on the forum and find one of his posts it gives his email address.

Keith.

Hello,

We don't do clutches here any more; too time consuming and there are others around that do this sort of thing all day! We sub out most of ours to our local (former Fiat agent) Ford and Slater, Leicester who are very good and quite reasonable.

In terms of cost, the clutch kit including slave cylinder should be under £250 and it is by no means certain that you would need a flywheel. The job takes about 9 hours so just multiply the hourly rate by 9 and you have your labour cost. I would try to negotiate a rate of around £70 from a non franchise specialist. Using this as a guide, you should expect to be paying between £1000 and £1200 for the job including VAT. If the flywheel requires replacement these are available from factors at about £265 inc VAT for an LUK item which is the same as the one originally fitted but at least £150 cheaper than a Fiat boxed one. It would not affect the labour charge much if at all. The OE items are either LUK or Valeo, and buying the after-market items saves a lot of money and compromises nothing.

As you can see; Robbo, above, is just about on the money with his estimate.

20,000 miles is pretty early for a clutch to go, on our vans (which are only fully loaded half of the time but are not treated well) we tend to get 100,000 miles or more from the clutch on a 3.0 but there are so many variables!
