Touring Europe this summer

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thoughts now on our spring, summer trips and the necessary legislation.

We have our Hymer which weighs in at 4100kg, registered new to us in April 2007, although built in 2005 old stock from Brown hills sold well discounted

We intend to stay out for the whole April to September, no specific route but would like to be able to visit France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, and maybe Spain and Portugal, although we usually do those in winter

Questions are what do I need legally in regard to stickers on the van for emissions and speed limitations

We haven't been for over 12 months and see lots of " new" regulations?

Thanks snail

I doubt you need be too concerned; apart from emisions restrictions in a few cities in France, for which I believe you need a sticker (and your MH is Euro 3 so you might not get one) you should be free to go anywhere.  The odd campsite in a French Town was inside an area signposted on the approach as for vehicles under 3.5 tons only but we ignored that as necessary.  (Our MH, a 2006 Hymer B674, is rated at 3.9 tons.)

Snail I would definatley get one for France. You never know where you might end up or be re-routed.

Try here

https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/demande-ext/cgu

You should only pay 4 Euro 80 and no more. Beware that there are some sites out there faking it and charging around £30 to do it for you. it is very easy to do yourself .

As for your Euro 3 engine. They even issue stickers for Euro 2, so you will have no problem.

This website has a lot of information about European emissions ‘sticker’ requirements

https://www.crit-air.fr/en/information-about-the-critair-vignette/additional-information/badgesvignettes-in-europe.html#c18231

You need to be aware that the website ‘middle-mans’ obtaining such stickers and charges (a lot) for the service. To obtain a French sticker, follow sabino’s advice.

France has a regulation requiring motorhomes with a maximum overall weight exceeding 3500kg ("les camping cars poids lourds”) to display three ‘speed limit’ discs on the vehicle’s rear. (ref. following link)

https://www.camping-car-plus.com/equipement-exterieur/exterieur-cabine-cellule/disques-limitation-de-vitesse/kit-3-disques-limitation-vitesse-3742.html

There’s been argument about whether this regulation applies to any over-3500kg vehicle travelling in France or only to French-registered vehicles, and this 2010 advice suggests the latter.

https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/5582430/french%20speed%20limits.pdf

(I’ve seen ‘heavy’ French-registered motorhomes displaying 80/100/110 discs, but I don’t recall seeing the discs on non-French-registered heavies.)

Will your house b e empty for the period you are away? Check your insurance policy, as most restrict to 6 weeks max. Will your MOT and van insurance be valid for the 6 months away? Do you need medication , and if so can you get it abroad? You can't even get paracetamol in France without a prescription !!

These are some of the things that need checking.

we have to restrict our time away due to some of the above, so be aware

hi Snail,

Sure you'll have a great trip, enjoy. As for the likes of Crit Air certificate and breathalyser for France I think it is a no brainer, does it matter if you find out later it is not absolutely necessary or you had one and never used it as together the cost is negligible so much easier to just sort it and forget about it. I believe Marseilles may be introducing the emission zone as will other places and like has been said earlier in the thread you never know where you will end up.

cheers and good travels

derek

Morning, thanks for your replies so far! Looks like I could adorn my van with stickers!

The crit air one seems to be worthwhile for France? Are there any other must haves for central Europe?

Will it be euro 3 or 4? Registered in 2007, built in 2005, 2.8 engine?

Have been long term touring for a few years now up to six months at a time, son lives at home, named on house insurance, and pays monthly bills instead of rent! So all good there.

Cheers snail

The French system is based on a vehicle’s date of first registration.

Your Hymer’s 2.8litre motor will be Euro 3, but its in-2007 registration-date should cause it to be awarded the orange Certificate Numbered “3” sticker appropriate to Euro 4 diesel-fuelled cars. (See table in following link)

According to this link

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/surname/uzzell

in the early 1900s Uzzells were most likely to live in Gloucestershire, and the incidence of the surname still seems to be concentrated in the Gloucestershire area and down towards Wales.

I’ve never attempted to trace my family tree, but I don’t think any of the Uzzells in, say, the last 100 years would have been closely related to the branch I’m in - and I’m the last of my line.

Sorry Derek didn't mean to pry or cause offence? Just coincidence I worked with Ted Uzzell 30 years ago he was a engine driver generators and turbines, taught me a few things, there was also Uzzell school of motoring in Morris 1000

Anyway thanks for your help
