Thai Bry
Just been checking systems in the van.I drained down the entire water system a while ago.Even opened the hot & cold water valves by the trauma heater.Just checked things and the pump is not working.I've put the heating on just to see if it thaws out.Question is can the pump freeze even though there's no water whatsoever in the tank, and the pump was not in any of the dregs in the water tank. Thanks in advance for your help and advice
Wilf
What do you mean "It's not working? Is it making a noise? If yes then no water because you have drained down! If no then you have no power to the pump or a faulty pump.
colin
Some pumps hold water even after draining down, you will have to cross fingers to hope body hasn't cracked.
Keithl
Is this a Whale submersible pump? If so it was it possibly still full of water? And would you be able to hear it running with no water in the tank (assuming it did work)? Keith.

A cautionary tale; Some years ago I failed to satisfactorily drain don our Malaga waterheater, and it froze and the boiler split, caused a lot of bother and expense. Since then I’ve been a lot more thorough, and I run the pump at the end of process, open hot and cold taps not for too long but a minute maybe? So far so good. I do same with my Karcher pressure washer. Regards, Snowie

It was working prior to me draining down the system. Also it was working when all taps were open during the drain down processHoping it's just due to the extreme cold weather and it will all workout when heaters thaw out the van. Thai Bry
Hi ColinPanic over, just checked everything, and after having the heating on, seems that all thawed out and pump is now working again. I'll leave heating on so everything remains thawed out. Thanks to all for your advice
Derek Uzzell
The following links mention shaking water from a submersible pump when ‘winterising’ a motorhome/caravan https://www.davan.co.uk/caravan-and-motorhome-workshop-services/caravan-and-motorhome-winterisation-advice/ https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/drain-down-kit-for-winterisation.41522/ This won’t always be practicable, but if the pump is accessible it’s worth doing. Derek Uzzell
I cannot find any mention of Alde heating above, but whatever type of heating system a motorhome has, there will be a water pump somewhere to suck water from the vehicle’s fresh-water tank. The water-pump might be made by SHURflo, Reich, Comet or (as in this case) be a Whale submersible pump. https://www.whalepumps.com/rv/product.aspx?Category_ID=10006&Product_ID=15&FriendlyID=Whale-Submersible-Electric-Pumps
