Arvy
Just wondered if anyone has hired a Motorhome in Australia. We are looking to do this next year for 3 months. Alternately has anyone purchased a motorhome and then sold it again when they left.
Zydeco Joe
We hired a motorhome back in 2003 from Perth but only for about a week so now any details are far out of date. Had a great time but a week was no long ( had 3 weeks in OZ) Don't know if we will ever bother to go again. We now own and use a coach build motorhome a Auto Trail Tracker that we use in Europe for 6 months of the year.Have fun. B-)
Wortho
A lot of the bigger hire companies such as Britz, MAUI, Kea and Mighty are all owned by the same company THL (Tourism Holdings Limited) and they move the vans around as they age to the more budget brands such as Mighty. Another one that is worth looking at is www.letsgomotorhomes.com.au/ as I see plenty of them on the road over here. Just keep in mind you are pretty much restricted to sealed roads with a 2wd camper so you can miss out on a lot of more remote destinations. Of course you can get 4WD camper such as this one but they are quite compact and usually a bit more expensive https://www.apollocamper.com/campervan-hire-trailfinder-camper.aspx Cheers

Matrix Meanderer
We hired from Britz in Sydney and dropped it off in Cairns, a one way hire. Due to the popularity we could only hire a VW powered panel van conversion. The engine was great but the motorhome part was poor. You do need to book a long way ahead (12 months?) if you want a specific vehicle at a popular time (Spring or Autumn). We know of people who have bought on a specialist motorhome market on New Zealand South Island and then sold after the holiday on North Island. Basically it was a lot of grief and paperwork but much cheaper than hiring. Don't know if there is the equivalent in Australia, I suspect there will be but have no information. 3 months is just about long enough to do one side of the country but only just. Bear in mind that distances can be enormous and boring, mile after straight mile of crops. You cannot go off the metalled road and the campsites are further apart. We used Big 4 and Top 10 sites which generally are very good with free BBQs and kitchens but rarely have cafes or bars. Air conditioned vehicles are a must most times of the year. Get one with intact insect screens as well for the obvious reason. :-D
Geeco
In addition to the good info posted by worthy you could review this site,www.sydneyrvgroup.com.au/tourist-information.They are probably the biggest new & used multi franchise motorhome & caravan dealer in Australia. They offer a buyback option for tourists. I understand they are part of the group mentioned by worthy. I purchased my current MH from them and they were fine to deal with as a new MH buyer. Can I also suggest you do your research on what time of the year you want to travel compared to where you plan to go. in our summer the northern part of the country does experience a wet season that brings often lots of rain & certainly high humidity. During that period we stay south of Bundaberg. It is great during Autum,Spring & Winter. The south is good all year but does get cold in winter especially in the mountain areas.cheers,

Arvy
Thanks Gary. Love where you live. Been to Oz 6 times to date normally 3 or 4 months at a time from March to June but have always done house swaps up in Queensland and once in Perth. We are motor homers in UK so would like do it around Oz for a change. Already been on the site you suggested, looks promising.
Wortho
You mentioned house swaps, there is also the option to do RV swaps with Australians wanting to see Europe etc. https://www.rvworldwide.com/ Another possible option is to hire a privately owned motorhome etc when the owners are not using them https://www.camplify.com.au/.
