Barryd999 Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Apparently the only factory currently equipped to make the vaccine at scale in Europe is in Belgium. The vaccine is somewhat tricky to transport and has a relatively short shelf life. Good job we’re not doing anything in January that may totally screw up the logistics of transporting stuff between Belgium and the UK then eh?

BioNTech, the German company which collaborated with Pfizer to work on the vaccine, was only founded 12 years ago......by two Turkish immigrants. Their company now worth almost £17 billion after it's shares shot up 23.4% on Monday. 8-) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/09/biontechs-covid-vaccine-a-shot-in-the-arm-for-germanys-turkish-community

Good job we’re not doing anything in January that may totally screw up the logistics of transporting stuff between Belgium and the UK then eh? At least it doesn't have to be shipped through the French ports! The tricky bit appears to be maintaining safe temperature control in transit and storage. It has to be kept at minus 70 deg C! The fridges in GP Surgeries for vaccine storage operate at temperature ranges simialr to domestic fridges. Even domestic freezers are only designed for minus 18 deg C. It seesm odd that there is such a tight and low temperature requirement when the active element of the vaccine is said to be a short chunk of RNA.

I cant see it being distributed from GP's surgeries Stuart. The logistics of distribution will probably be more complex than developing the vaccine. I would imagine it is more likely to be distributed in massive sports halls or stadiums with special mobile refrigeration units. Our rural GP still uses a fax machine and can only cope with a handful or two of patients at a time. It could well be because of the volatile nature of this vaccine and that it requires such low temperatures that another one may overtake it in time. This is pure speculation of course. You would know more than most of us as to the most likely way forward I would have thought. As regards shipping it unless it can be maintained at the required temperature I think it has to be administered within 24 hours so if thats the case and its coming from Belgium if it cant come through the French ports we better hope it can come by plane.

Chins up princess you reckon the chaos would have been all over then had we left six months or maybe a year earlier? LOL! Chances are we would have probably left right in the middle of the first wave or soon before it. That would have really been helpful I am sure (not). The only reason it was held up was to avoid a crash out Brexit that would have caused the chaos at all our ports not to mention the damage to the economy. Perhaps if they had agreed to a confirmatory referendum years ago then we could have had it done and dusted one way or another much sooner.

GP's have already been put on standby to distribute the vaccine, Pfizer have a suitcase sized freezer for the vaccine. p.s. The first inline will be care home residents and workers, they won't be shipping these out of the homes.

How you Im not laying the blame for Covid on anyone but I have no doubts that its been handled badly by a government that was put in place to do one job, Brexit and not only can they not get that right they have totally failed in the handling of the virus. So you could argue, no Brexit and we might have had a safer pair of hands on the tiller when the covid sh1t really hit the fan.
