Buying Privately

Morning all.

I've looked at all the buying advice available on OutAndAboutLive and there are some solid tips on buying from a private seller. But no mention of any vehicle inspection services that can be paid for to check out a potential vehicle and produce a report on its condition. There are all the usual HPI checks to make sure everything legally and financially is straight. But I know pretty well nothing about mechanics etc. so would really want an expert to have a look at any vehicle I was thinking about buying.

Does anyone know of or had any experience of such services?

Many thanks

David

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, David.

I have no personal experience of commercial pre-purchase inspection services, but they certainly are available. The results of a quick GOOGLE-search shows examples.

Thanks everyone for the hints and tips. All really useful. Still looking at the moment but now I know that I can get a vehicle check done, I'll feel a little more confident about buying privately. Good point about doing the HPI check just before handing over the money to make sure it hasn't been refinanced.

Cheers everyone :-D

Bit obvious, but also ask to see the manuals etc, service/damp check records, (base and conversion), and the V5C log book, just to be certain the seller is actually, the owner. I assume you've also picked up on making sure the seller does actually live at the address he is selling from - and isn't merely posing as the owner of someone else's temporarily empty property!

Thanks Brian. Yeah, I'm hopefully fully clued up to all the potential scams that are out there. I watch all the consumer programs and listen to You and Yours on Radio 4. Shocking and heartbreaking what the *!**!!!*!**ers manage to pull off. So my main concern was with the vehicle itself and getting a trusted and independent review of it before agreeing to the purchase.
