EU Dog passport

Haven’t taken ours over since lockdown ended and Brexit rules came in but I do know our pet Passports are no longer valid. Under the new rules I believe you have to get a Health Certificate (in addition to the rabies vacs/chip requirements) from your vet and within a certain time frame if travelling - possibly ten days before. I’m also fairly sure you have to visit a vet prior to returning for the usual flea/tick/tapeworm treatment and vet check.

The best place to confirm all the latest requirements would be the Defra website.

Hi Dave.                                                           We’ve taken ours using the HC which we paid £120 for our 2 dogs. In July this year.
plus of course the French vet to administer the worming tablets and sign the paperwork.
€30 for the 2 dogs.
we have used a vet in Spain for 6 years and they confirmed we can have EU passports no problem.
just wanted to know if a visit to an eu vet before returning.
website not to clear on this.

Den,

We have an EU passport for our dog and can confirm that you will still need to visit an EU vet (for worming) between 1 and 5 days before returning to the UK.  You'll probably know this but you will need to get AHCs again next time to get you over to Europe until you get your pet passports.  Then, once you have the passports, all future rabies injections will have to be done by an EU vet and recorded in the passport.  Don't ask a UK vet to write in the passport or it will be invalidated. £120 for two dogs sounds a bargain, I have been quoted £225. Where did you get yours done?

Hi Angel

great to hear from someone whom has the EU dog passports.
I guessed we’d still have to visit a vet on our return, but it’s nice you’ve confirmed it.
do you have any problems at all on your return using the EU passports.

peter.
my wife just reminded me like they all do. I was wrong with the price.
mot was actually £125.00 for both dogs.
this was done at Henwick vets, Worcester.
very modern veterinary practice and extremely good.

Hi Den,

No, we have not had any problems at all using the passport.  I have heard of cases where the vet providing the passport made an error filling it in and the passport was refused when checked at the port for return to the UK.  To guard against this it's perhaps a good idea on your first occasion to ask the vet who does the worming treatment towards the end of your holiday to stamp both the AHC and the passport.  Then at the port just hand over the passport and if it is accepted all well and good and no worries next time. If, however, there is a problem at least you will have the valid AHC to get you home.

Peter,

Depending which port you will be leaving from you may be able to make use of one of the Vets who specialise in providing AHCs that are completed using info you supply in advance, so that the certificates are ready for collection as you are en route to the ferry or tunnel. Abbeywell Vets, Folkstone  charge £99 for one dog and £30 for additional pets.  PassPets, Portsmouth  charge £99 for the first dog and £50 for additional pets.  I haven't used either of them but have read good reports of them.

Thanks Angela

good to hear you’ve not experienced any problems with your EU passports.
we used to use a very nice vet in Etaples and during our visit in August he mentioned he was retiring in September ☹️.

he was excellent and very reasonable for our 2 dogs.
we’ll arrange for the passport and AHC to be stamped in Spain by the passport supplying vet.
thanks again for your reassurance

What I'm interested in, is the process of acquiring an EU passport in the first place. My understanding is that you first of all need to take the dog abroad (obviously with up to date rabies injection and AHC then use a vet in the EU to issue one. I think you also need to be able to provide an address in that country at which the dog is registered. Once you have acquired the passport, you can then change the owner and the address to your own. Is that correct?  A brief account of the process from someone who has done it would be really appreciated.

I'm new here so it may already exist. If so a link would be good.

I’m France we were told we needed a French address.
when I checked at a vet we’ve used a few times, they did not request a Spanish address.
im 50% lucky in a way.
we did have a place in Spain until we sold it July 2021. But we still have bills to show etc and a Spanish account along with my wise account.
so 🤞🏻when we go next year the deed can be done.

As Den said, in France you do need a current French address & the animal has to be registered on the French I-CAD system.  Other countries are not so strict although I have heard that it can vary between individual Vets, presumably depending on their views on Brits asking for a pet passport post Brexit.  Lots of Brits have had passports issued in Spain either using their home address or the address they are staying at (including camp sites).  Although I have read of one or two people being refused in Belgium it seems many Belgian vets are happy to issue a passport and that is where we obtained one early last year.  We travelled out with an AHC and evidence of a current rabies injection but the vet insisted on doing another rabies jab as she said she had heard of people having problems at the port where rabies details were simply copied in.  The main thing is that the date the microchip is implanted or read must not postdate the date of the current rabies jab so the vet was playing safe by reading the chip then giving a new jab.  Something to be aware of is that some continental vets, but not all,  give jabs that are only good for one year (unlike the 3 year ones that are normal in the UK) so it is best to ask before agreeing as any future jabs will need to be done by an EU vet to keep the passport valid.

My recommendation is to take a short holiday in Ireland, entering through Northern Ireland, and visit Donegal. It’s lovely. Travelling into NI there are no checks on dogs for the foreseeable future (please feel free to check this on NI government website), you can get an AHC for the trip if you like, but nobody at the port will ask for it. Once in Ireland, you’re free to get a pet passport at any vet, the Irish government policy states that you do not need an address in Ireland in order to get one. Again, feel free to check. A rabies shot administered and recorded at the time is best, a transcription from uk paperwork may be challenged later. Rabies shots in Ireland last 3 years, by the way. Some vets like to see an AHC at the time, some don’t mind either way. I’ve done this for both my dogs, also once for my daughters’, and once accompanying a friend, so 4 times in total (I’m retired and not short of time). All very easy. 85 euros for papers and jab

We had a vet in Belgium give rabies jabs and pet passport for our two labradors, in feb,  for about 100 euros. We came home and then had another trip to Europe with no problems. We will need to have them vaccinated again in a couple of years but will tie that in to a trip to the  Xmas markets.
