Excessive quote

We have just been quoted £7,000.00 for a new clutch, included in this is 32 hours labour, to be fitted to our Swift Kontiki Black Edition which we find completely ridiculous. Whilst we appreciate that the engine needs to be removed & replaced it just seems excessive. We had problems finding a garage near to us, Chingford, London & have ended up in Erith, Kent due to the size of the van. Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome please.

It does seem excessive!

Perhaps you can give a bit more information.

How old is the van?

Is it a 2.3 or 3.0 Engine?

Manual or Comfortmatic?

As Sydney has said, see if you can find a local fleet business that maintain their own vehicles.

Commercial fitters are used to the sort of jobs that might faze your typical car mechanic.

It’s a long time since I retired from the Ambulance Service but it was a little known fact that some services used to undertake work on private vehicles in their workshops as a source of income generation. Quite what the changes brought about by Trust status have made I’m not entirely sure but it is worth a call.

What model of Kon-Tiki Black edition do you have? And more importantly what length is it and is it a tag axle? This will severely limit the number of garages able to raise it on a ramp to remove the engine and gearbox!

Keith.
