teccer1234
how do I know when to stop pumping the grease gun when greasing the tag axle on hymer B 694, (wheels off the ground)
simians
Can't help on your particular van, but generally on joints such as prop shafts UJs kingpins etc grease is pumped until clean new grease is forced out of the joint. Whereas in an open application such as lubing the torque springs in your axle its a given number of strokes of the grease gun, usually 6 or so in my experience, fairly imprecise really, grease guns tend to deliver varying amounts of grease per squeeze as it were. If no manual figure is available (or someone actually knows) around 6 plus strokes of the gun would be a reasonable guess, and at least be preferable to nothing at all, anymore possibly just a waste of grease. simians
Quick google search shows 5-7 strokes of the gun until a little resistance felt, then stop as damage may occur to seals. Plenty of advice on the Al Ko tag grease up.
Derek Uzzell
This 2019 forum discussion (and the links in it) may be of interest https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/topic/45969-alko-axle-greasing/ This 2018 Practical Motorhome article https://www.practicalmotorhome.com/advice/spotlight-on-al-ko-amc-chassis advises Servicing and care In terms of servicing, guidance is provided in the handbook, which suggests that the axle should be greased every 20,000km or 12 months, whichever comes first. Each side of the axle will require three to four squirts of grease into each nipple, to keep everything inside the axle tube properly lubricated, or until resistance in the pump is felt. “AL-KO recommends use of the following grease for lubricating the bearings on the axle tube: Klüber Stabutherm GH 461 or Fa CONDA – Cardex 3746 SP.” It might be old technology, but a hand grease gun is sufficient. However, this must take place when the axle is unladen, that is, with the motorhome raised and safely supported with stands under the chassis, so the axle is free of weight. The grease nipples can be found on the lower side of the axle tube, pointing downwards one either side and protected by a plastic cap. (Plainly the amount of grease that each 'squirt' of the grease-gun puts into the axle will depend on the gun that's being used.)
teccer1234
a bit warm to work but today I took advice from here and jacked up each side in turn and greased the axles, only managed to get about 3-4 strokes of the gun before I felt a definite resistance so stopped so hopefully that's it for the next 12 months. thanks for your help
onecal
Hi That should be sufficient , but I would advise re check before the winter months especially if not been used (always make sure the axle is unladen while greasing) Regards
