twooks
ok -serious answer buddy, went to nuremburg, yonks ago admittedly - it was great - it's quite a bit further than koln - but it is a beautiful spot - even without the xmas market - you could also check out wurttemberg - which I remember as another beautiful spot or hamelin ?? pied piper land or if you don't want to travel that far there's always http://www.brugesinfo.com/christmas-and-new-year.php B-)

Guest caraprof
I think that you'll find Nuremberg too far for a short trip to the Christmas markets. It's on the other side of Germany in the old DDR and not that far from Austria and the Czech Republic. I suggested Cologne because it's probably the nearest of the major German cities to Calais. It's a delightful place with a lovely old town and a fabulous cathedral. The public transport like many German cities is superb and you can go everywhere by bus or tram for very little cost.
michele
I have to tell you Frank he's at work and I,m not supposed to send e mail Met police and all that but I could not resist so i have sent it to him . hopefully he will get the time before work finishes if he's not to busy. It looks fantastic and this year with not having the little one to worry about the other two are mobile which means we can actually get out of the camper without too much trouble so it would be really nice and we can actually use the public Transport with out to much hag as hubby can lift them on and off so looking like a real possibility. keep em coming folks perhaps we can make a long list of all the winter resorts and markets as this does come up every year would be nice just to look at this every year save repeating them all . What do you all think. *-)

net-traveller
The official german tourist board xmas market site is - http://www.germany-christmas-market.org.uk/index1.htm You might also take at look at Belgium as they tend to be big on Xmas, Brussels Grand Place with trees, cribs etc. Valkenburg in Holland is another biggy. They hold their market in the local caves. France also does Xmas markets but they seem to be more on the food, drink and gifts side whereas the above also do a good street decoration as well. ;-)

Having said that we went to Dublin several years ago with GB Privilege and can heartily reccomend them. D.
michele
Dave obviously I have not read it right but I think it says catch a plane 1 night in the Hotel pick up your M/H ...return by plane . I have obviously missed something :D
davenewellhome
That's for people hiring a motorhome out there, if you read further down the page it tells you all about the Valkenburg and Aachen escorted motorhome tour. anyway, you don't have to go with them you could always go on your own to Valkenburg or Aachen, I seem to recall the caravan site at one of those two towns is on top of the hill and the market is held inside caves beneath the campsite, how cool is that? Mel B
Now then you lot, stop it! You're really being rotten! I have got 2 weeks off at Christmas but can't go abroad because my niece is getting married on Sat 29 December right slap bang in the middle. To go abroad for a week is just not worth it because of the cost of the dogs - minimum £150 for ferry & vets fees on return. And nooooooo, I am NOT putting them in kennels! To see their furry little faces light up on Christmas day when they are tearing their pressies open (the ones that their 'Nana' gives them I hasten to add!) and find a load of chews, squeaky toys (my Mum gets them just to annoy us I'm sure!) :-D For us it'll have to be somewhere in the UK so we can escape on 30th and not come back until the following Sunday for work. Now if my niece wasn't getting married we'd certainly be joining Michele ... I wonder if I can persuade her to get married in New Zealand where she lives instead!!! :D
Ina
We have been to the Christmas markets 3 times now. The one in Cologne is superb, as has already been said. We stayed at camping Berger http://www.camping-berger-koeln.de/english/camping_berger_home.html There is a busstop about 10 minutes walk from that site which takes you to the train station, and from there you get the train into town. The toiletblock on that site is superb, roasting hot, just what you need when it's freezing cold! Another place is Munster, not that far from Cologne, again a super site nearby: http://www.campingplatz-muenster.de/ About 3 minutes walk from the busstop which takes you straight into town. Munster is lovely too. Hameln is another place where we have been (twice). Campsite http://www.campingplatz-faehrhaus-hameln.de/ This is within walking distance of Hameln, not a big town, but good sized and also lovely. There is a Greek restaurant on the site too, which is superb! Nuremberg is further down, quite a drive. I don't think it is in the old DDR though, it lies between Frankfurt and Munich, and is about 250 miles from Cologne. We went there the first time we went to the Xmas markets and it was fantastic. Can't think of the name of the site we stayed at there, but if you are interested I can look it up for you. Another place we went to was Soest, near to Dusseldorf, that is a lovely little town, not so big, and no campsite open in December, we went from Dusseldorf on the train to there. Can definitely recommend the markets, and as for the gluhwein, say no more, can taste it now!
