Help in Spain

Recommended Posts

Our Spain/Potrugal/France trip has started and here I am in Torre del Mar. The weather has been great 24 degrees and sunny. Unfortunately the charger has stopped working. Chelston are sending out a replacement (no hesitation) but my problem is finding anyone who can remove the old unit and fix the new one. There is a car electrics place here who I thought could do it but they now say too many fuses, therefore wires. They like one in and two out if you know what I mean.

Soooo does anyone have any experience of fitting a Sargent EC225 power unit or preferably know of anyone in the Malaga to Cadiz area who might be able to help. Even point me in the direction of how to find specialists here would give me something to chase.

I know I could make a sketch of the existing and try myself, but frying pan into fire commes to mind. Cheers

I would be surprised if you cannot find someone in Malaga to fix it. If its a language difficulty, there is a Vice-Consulate in Malaga, near the bus station if I remember correctly, who should be able to assist.

No its not a language problem, I have enough to get by. From where I live in the UK there are any number of competant people who could do it within a few hours drive. We are very fortunate in the UK having such a good source of service. In Malaga there is nada. My son lives in Italy and he says it is the same there. For instance if you want to buy a motorhome here you have to go to Madrid. From Exeter I have a choice of several within an hours drive!!!!

Thanks Dave for your quick response I have saved the manual, beyond me I think to install and translate into Spanish.

There's a Dutch or German guy who travels along the coast fitting solar panels and other vanning paraphenalia with a big Uni-Mog. I think he could do it for you no problem. I don't know where you are but there are usually a few freecampers around the area, they might have his flyer with his phone contact details on.

I haven't used him myself but earlier this year when we were there he was in Torre fitting two panels to a German van. His work was neat and thorough from what I saw.

Also if you are on "Camping Torre Del Mar" there might be someone on the site who can help. There are a mixed bag of nationalities and someone might know someone. In fact thinking about it, there is a guy who goes on Motorhomefacts website who winters there. If you are a member of that site you could PM him. He goes under the forum name of "Binky"!

Fitting is very easy and well within the abilities of anyone who can reach the unit to get the retaining screws out.

It should then tilt forward enabling you to see the various connectors.

There is a 12v input plug, a slightly larger 12v output plug and a longer 12v display unit plug all of which simply pull out.

There is also a mains input plug and two mains output plugs which also pull out. The two output plugs are identical and I am unsure whether switching them would make a difference so best to mark one to avoid that risk.

Refitting is simply a reverse process.

Best make sure that your mains lead is disconnected first but I would not worry about disconnecting the batteries unless the instructions specifically tell you to.

It really is that easy!

Good luck and enjoy your 24 degree sunshine as we back in cols wet and windy Brown's Britain are not in the least bit envious - yeah right!

If you walk to the MERCADONA Supermarket at the top of TORRE near the n340 and walk around the block by the flats / appartments you will find below the flats some garages and there is a German there who has set up a Caravan repair centre, I know he sorts out Fridge and gas problems and he has a small accessorary sales, he will I am sure be able to sort your problem for you. I can't give you better directions than I have but am sure with a bit of effort you will find him , :-o :-o

Not only but also, as you leave TORRE on the N 340 heading towards Malaga at about 1 kilometre from Torre on the right hand side of the N 340 there is a Caravan dealer / storage. he has a showroom and could probably help with your problem also. Have you had a ride to Velez Malaga from Torre on the new tramyet ? we thought it was great.

Gosh chaps what can I say. Great help and I should be able to resolve my problem with one of the suggestions. I did wonder tracker if it might be possible to do DIY and when (if) the new unit arrives I will have a look see first before seeking further help. I have downloaded the instructions from Sargents as suggested by Dave G.

I know where you mean Malc I will cycle up there later as I need some more of the wonderful prawns they have here.

Again many thanks for all your prompt assistance.

Incidentally just along the road from Camping Torre del Mar there is a very large area of free camping, there are no facilities I can see but it is facing the beach and the sea, there are also a couple of chiringuitos next to it. There are also any number of nationalities just parked up in various places around the town. Some of them in the quieter backwaters look as if they may have been there for some while.

Unfortunately I was told today that he was killed on a quad in the summer, makes you realise this aint a practice, its the only time we get.

I have today received the replacement charging unit. What brilliant service from Chelston Motorhomes and Sargents who make the unit. No arguments no hasstle and excellent back up service. Also the really good news is that it looks as if the connections do just plug in so even I should be able to fix it.

So thanks everybody. Oh yes and did I mention the sun is shining and the sky is a beautiful shade of blue.(lol)(lol)

Hi Roy,

Glad to hear that you seem to be sorted. The weather in Devon today ( well, Plymouth anyway) is the same as yours, sun and blue sky. Unfortunately, it is b.....y cold and rain is expected again tomorrow. Best wishes.

I have followed this thread with interest! Tell me 'Porky' how do you do your computer connect to this site? I know most sites now have WiFi which I have used myself.

I had the site saved in my my favourites (well actually as part of a folder in Mozilla Firefox) so all I have to do when I have a wi fi connection is click on it and hey presto there we are connected.
