Steve928
I thought you might be amused to see what Google/Facebook have deduced from my contributing to a thread containing references to Plumber's Mate :-D
John52
I'm using flomasta plumbers putty at the moment - seems to be the same as plumber's mate. They do soften with heat. I put the tub in the microwave for half a minute or so if its very cold to make it warm enough to be workable - but you don't want it hot or it sticks to everything. Had plumbers mate sealing my rooflight for 10 years and its never got soft enough to melt or stop doing its job. But the roof is white, so won't get as hot as a dark coloured roof. Derek Uzzell
Everbuild also produces a plumbers putty product https://www.everbuild.co.uk/product/113-plumbers-putty/ (but I don’t know if it’s any better than its competitors) and there’s a handy usage guide for this type of material here https://www.thespruce.com/plumbers-putty-2718686 I notice that, besides the “Plumbers Mait” putty stuff, a “Plumber's Mate Power Wand” is marketed and described in this video and I think there’s a special offer at Screwfix on February 14. ( I’m not a professional plumber so how the Power Wand might be employed is a mystery to me - perhaps John can explain.)

jumpstart
I would just add some caution to using Plumbers Mate on the black plastic/ windscreen as during summer it will get extremely hot and I know from experience that it will tend to run downhill. I left a tub of it in my van,it had fallen on its side without the lid on,the van inside was around 30 deg C, it flowed out across the floor of the van, stuck to everything. The tape I have used has worked very well so far.

niktam
Just took a look at the PVC tape repair across the windscreen and I don't think it liked the cold weather over the last few nights! It is peeling in part. I have some wider tape now 30mm against the normal 19mm tape that I used last time. Will a wipe with meths remove any residue before I re tape it over the weekend as the weather is due to improve? Also the main drainpipe is leaking at the joint so it drips just next to the oil filler cap so I've added some polythene until I take a look at that as well! All covered with frozen snow now. Fred Duck
niktam - 2021-02-11 2:48 PM Also the main drainpipe is leaking at the joint so it drips just next to the oil filler cap so I've added some polythene until I take a look at that as well! Ours did that as well. Even though the drain was completely clear it still leaked at the joint. Threw away the crappy metal clip that did very little and replaced with a Jubilee Clip. Problem solved. It's almost as if Fiat wants rain water to flood over these engines 8o| FD

Derek Uzzell
The first 14-or-so postings of this thread were in August 2010 and would have related to Boxer/Ducato/Relay X250 vehicles built between mid-2006 and mid-2014. The thread was resurrected on 1 February 2021 and some subsequent comments have been relevant to X250s while others to X290 vehicles that began to be built in mid-2014. As X250 and X290 scuttle design differs, improvements applying (say) to Fred Duck’s X250 may not be relevant to Niktam’s X290. For example, the attached photo shows the engine compartment of a 2019 X290 RHD Peugeot Boxer with Euro 6 motor. The green arrow points to the windscreen scuttle’s large-bore central drain hose and - not visible in photo - there is another large-bore drain hose at the scuttle’s left and right ends. There is a LOT of on-line discussion about the X250 issue (and ‘fixes’) https://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/276197-australian-fiat-ducato-water-ingress-unsealed-engine-rust.html https://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/354030-ducato-water-ingress-hopefully-fixed.html https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/x250-scuttle-drain-improvisation.101566/ https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/2014-ducato-scuttle-panel-leak.104609/ https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/ducato-windscreen-scuttle-leaks.230874/ https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/peugeot-scuttle-water-dam.230528/ https://picclick.co.uk/Fiat-Ducato-Motorhome-Engine-Bay-Water-Deflector-264955951177.html Evidently the issue also spilled over into the RAM “Promaster” models marketed in the USA and, as these Mexico-built Ducato ‘clone’ vehicles continue to have an X250 front end not the revised X290 frontal treatment, the original water ingress problem persists. https://www.promasterforum.com/threads/water-drainage-in-the-engine-compartment.84639/
John52
Fred Duck - 2021-02-05 12:14 PM witzend - 2021-02-05 11:47 AM Derek Uzzell - 2021-02-04 3:08 PM The Geocel sealant should be an excellent choice. Product details are here I'd be wary of using a adhesive as You & Fred suggest rather go with some thing non setting to enable easy removal of scuttle in the future as John suggests It doesn't, actually, 'set' in the traditional sense. The trick is to only use the thinnest of beads rather than a full tube per side! I have removed the off side half of scuttle panel once and it came away pretty easily. Just required careful easing along the seam with the blade of my putty knife. FD Well you couldn't 'use the thinnest of beads' on mine because it isn't a perfect fit. There are gaps that need to be filled.
goldi
Hello, The plastic thing on my fiat Qubo came adrift a few weeks ago and so I stuck it back with clear sikaflex. I held the plastic in place with bricks wrapped in cloth to avoid scratching. It has worked . I would not hesitate to use silicone on the ducato because it is easily cut with a knife.
