Im thinking of towing a car with my Autocruise Starspirit 2008 model,I am over70 so restricted to towing a trailer of 750kg, the Starpirit is on a 3500kg chasis .Am i right in thinking I can add the two figures together and be legal if I dont exceed 4250kg .Im sure I saw this written somewhere .Obviously it seems unlikly as the car Im thinking of would be somewhere around 800 to 1000kg.Why are things so complicated.I must be getting old. :'(

Sorry David but your assumptions are wrong!

First question, do you have category B or B+E on your licence?

My assumption is that it should be B+E as you do not lose any entitlement to towing trailers when you reach age 70. So as long as you had a category B+E license before 1st January 1997 or have passed a B+E test since you are OK.

So with Category B+E you can drive any vehicle weighing less than 3,500 kg and tow ANY trailer with it subject to the towing vehicles plated limits.

Have a look on direct.gov for more info.

Keith.

Hi Dave,

Sorry but I don't fully understand your reply.

Do you have BE on your licence?

If so you can tow any weight of trailer with your MH as long as you don't exceed your MH's plated weights.

Keith.

Edit. You are NOT restricted to 750 kg as long as you have BE.
