boxer1
My nephews 2004 Autotrail is not charging the leisure battery when on the move. What could be the problem. Could it be a fuse and if so where would I find the fuse. Boxer1
Keithl
Most probably near the starter battery under the bonnet along with the split charge relays. Follow a bundle of red wires connected to the positive terminal and you should find them. PS Wiring diagrams can be downloaded from the Sargent Electrical website if you don't have them already Link. boxer1
Keith thank you very much for the diagram when I see my nephew I will be able to identify the fuse. Boxer
Billggski
If not a fuse, could be a loose or corroded terminal, worse case is a duff battery or charger.
Brian Kirby
Or that the relay itself has failed, or connector detached from its terminal. All should be close by, so shouldn't be that hard to find. Last thought. Are the 12V electrics working? If not, look for a fuse close to the leisure battery itself, and check it.
sshortcircuit
If it's a Fiat the most likely position for the fuses are under a plastic cover just above the rocker cover in the middle of the engine bay, held on by 4 nuts and not the relay box to the right. You should find two relays and a fuse block with four fuses. Please feed back how you get on so we can all learn
Harvey
Is it charging the leisure battery from the inboard charger when on electric hook up? If not charging then either it may be the fuse blown adjacent to the leisure battery in the charging circuit. Hatvey

boxer1
Found the problem. It was the fuse at the vehicle battery. The plastic part of the fuse was melted and difficult to get out and it would appear that the fuse wire was still in tact very strange. Replaced the fuse and all is well so far. Why would the plastic part of the fuse melt. Boxer1
Brambles
Either poor connections to the fuse or it is getting hot as too much current flowing, but not enough to blow it. I would check the leisure battery as may be getting old and drawing too much charge current.
boxer1
Stalwart The battery was replaced 2 years ago. Why would it be getting to much current. Noxer1
Brambles
It may be it has been discharged too far and so will take a much highre charge current which is higher than the fuse is rated for or the battery has a fault. However as the battery was not charging, and you say the fuse wire apeared intact then it looks more like a bad connection to the fuse which has had high resistance and cause it all to get hot. Brian Kirby
Which might indicate the fuse carrier/holder should be replaced as well as the fuse? If the fuse is not a tight fit in the holder there could be some degree of arcing which might explain the heating. Better safe than sorry?
boxer1
Thanks all for the advice. Brian the fuse was hard to get out and the replacement was tight to put in but I will just check it again when I see him. Boxer1
