now I have a big problem

hello all here is my problem. I pulled away from my home yesterday and after hearing a noise under the Citroen relay I found that the complete lpg tank was on the floor and leaking a full tank of gas over the floor. I called the r.a.c. and he removed it by cutting the pipes etc off , with my permission. the problem now is I am finding it hard to find someone to refit it back to the van. I live in Bolton near Manchester if anyone can point me in the right direction of a fitter. it will need the pipes joining together and the 2 wires along with new brackets. thank you.

Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear your tale of woe! The tank really should have been mounted with the weight bearing down onto a cradle and then held in place by the straps. The straps should NEVER support the weight of the tank.

The only place I know of who undertake work like this is Autogas 2000 aka Autogas Leisure in Thirsk. It may be worth giving them a call.

You don't say what your motorhome is and what year. If you know the name of the company of the tank it may be best to go to them. There is a Company called Autogass2000 in Thirsk that does refillable tanks and bottles. There may be a company logo on the tank itself. Might be a specialist job.

If the RAC man had to cut the pipes to release the tank, which was already leakimg, is the tank damaged, in which case you may well have to replace it?

I doubt you will be able to join the gas pipes and I would be more inclined to replace them with new ones.

Without knowing what van and the layout, you might - or might not - be able to consider reverting to gas bottles as possibly more cost effective than buying a new tank plus fittings and pipework?

Thank you all for your help. the van is a 2007 Citroen relay 2.2 diesel. the tank was held on by 2 metal straps covered in plastic. unfortunately Thirsk is an hour and a half from here and I can't leave my disabled wife for 3 hours travel time. I have rang the company on Manchester road and they cannot do it and the people they suggested can't do it either so the problem continues.

Can your Wife not go with you in the motorhome, Thirsk is a lovely place to visit for the day, especially Market Day. If AutoGas can do it in a day then that would be your answer.

sorry for the delay in replying but my wife has been in hospital for major back surgery but is now home. I have rang a firm in worsley and they have quoted around £500 to refit the tank and test the system. This sounds expensive but not having been in this situation before I will ring a few others and see what they say. Thank you once again for your advice.

Sorry to hear about your problems. The 2-straps method was and is common in fitting under-slung tanks, but it has to be remembered that this is NOT a fit and forget solution and it needs checking regularly - its not something the MOT or Hab check will cover either.

I DIY fitted a tank on my previous van, and exchanged the straps after a couple of years as I could see they were slightly corroded. If you catch it in time then this is a fairly simple DIY task (although the tank does need to be dropped to reach the swing arm part of the brackets).

Gas-It may have been the tank supplier http://www.gasit.co.uk . Where the tank's weight is being taken on the straps, they recommend THREE straps - the two that come with the frame and an extra one in the middle.

Gas-It also supplies several vehicle specific mounting kits, and their newer tanks have mounting feet on them dispensing with the need for the straps all together.

While the tank is off your van, be sure to check the actual tank for corrosion. The powder coat on mine was poor and I ended up cleaning it up and re-painting it with red hammerite. Get a dose of schultz on it as well for stone-chip protection or have a guard fitted.

Message to take home from this is that these tanks whether DIY or Converter fitted are NOT fit and forget and should be checked 6-monthly for signs of corrosion. Your motorhome habitation service man is unlikely to even glance under the vehicle let alone inspect the tank and its brackets.

Thank you Nigel for your advice. I rang the gas it people today and he was amazing, he pointed me in the direction of 2 people close by who do the tanks and I can't thank you and all the people who have answered this post enough. I can now get to have my van fixed. Thank you once again.??

Mark, glad you may have found a possible solution but I should also point out that one thing Autogas 2000 do that others don't is make proper steel brackets for underlying tanks that bolt directly to the chassis. They would also spray the whole tank/assembly with anti stone chip paint to offer more protection. You can also stay overnight at their premises.

I have rang "gas it" and they have given me the name of 2 local fitters. I have rang Dave who is a mobile fitter who they have recommended and he has quoted £460 with new smaller tank, fitting and safety check so that getting done on the 28th. Thank you for all your advice it is both appreciated and helpful.
