That's funny. I hope you have a very credible explanation and please.....do try making it sensible, explanation as to why just two...yes 2 Tory MP's voted against the illegal invasion of Iraq, where 84 Labour MP's voted against??

If you could look beyond the daily mail you would see taxpayers are paying bigger subsidies since privatisation - despite the extortionate fares. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/apr/16/rail-operators-200m-dividends-subsidy And those are only the direct subsidies - doesn't take account of all the indirect costs like road users having to stop and wait for trains at level crossings.

British Rail took over a railway that had been worn out by the war effort. They hung on to less efficient steam trains for too long but in the National Interest because it helped the balance of payments (we had coal but no oil) and helped employment (we had the facilities to build and maintain steam but not diesel) Private companies have no such handicaps, took over a modernised slimmed down network, and got bigger taxpayers subsidies to run a more expensive service >:-)

Just compare the greed of the Trade Unions to the greed of the Railway company bosses >:-)

Or get on a state owned train in the EU and compare the fares and service with Britains privatised and subsidised railways >:-)

Nope they are keeping the Golden Goose and handing the mess they have made back to the taxpayer - again. I can't really improve on the top 2 rated comments....

Not normally someone who thinks privatisation is a bad thing but this is just daft. A company goes belly up running this franchise, the government take control and make a really good, profit making fist of it, they then flog it off to Stagecoach who then screw it up BUT can still run the West Coast line and bid for other services. This is economics of the madhouse.

When it was renationalised as East Coast it did a good job - do that again and break Stagfecoach's near monopoly which has done a good job for shareholders perhaps, but not for the travelling public.

My you loony lefties do like to spin the facts dont you Peter ;-) ........

"The Government argues that Britain’s railways have been transformed under privatisation and are now carrying record numbers of passengers, when the industry was once in decline.

A spokesman for the DfT said: “The amount of money East Coast returns to the government has nothing to do with whether it is privately or publicly run.

“For example, East Coast currently runs older trains and operates fewer services than West Coast, its nearest competitor. Therefore its costs are lower and it is able to return more money to Government.

“We’re addressing that by investing in brand new trains and hundreds of millions of pounds worth of improvements to stations and track. A strong private-sector partner will be best placed to build on that investment and deliver more frequent, comfortable and reliable services for passengers along the route.”

Straight from the Torygraph whose owners live in a Tax haven under threat by the EU and Jeremy Corbyn.

If those are your sources I can see we are going to have to back to basics here.

Some routes are more profitable than others, so the Government taxes some and subsidises others ( a recipe for corruption) Overall the taxpayer loses (as usual) as the Taxpayer pays more to tyhe rail companies than it gets back.

Well it wasn't last time it was in public ownership. Not saying being managed by civil servants was highly efficient. But having one single management (however bad) was better than 2000+ un-coordinated private sector companies with their overpaid bosses all trying to milk the system and blame each other.

Thats right you'd have whole areas taken up on trains by whole families whose father worked for British Rail and got a family pass for nothing and paying customers couldn't get on because of em ... Happy days ... I knew someone very well that worked on British Rail maintenance team and he supplied us with many things , lead , stone , power tools and so on all at the taxpayers expense of course ... That's not what you said. You said "he supplied us with many things , lead , stone , power tools and so on all at the taxpayers expense.."

Had you purchased them legitimately 1) you'd have receipts and vat records, and 2) you wouldn't have felt the urge to openly boast about receiving goods from a BR employee "all at the taxpayers expense".

You dropped a clanger by posting that so don't try back tracking. It's too late for that.

British Rail was paid for by the British taxpayer wasn't it ??? Maybe Im wrong ... So everything sold if at a loss or purchased was at the British tax payers expense wasn't it ??? ... Talking of receipts we must check up on that as I don't think he ever forwarded us the promised paperwork ... Why he wouldn't accept a cheque i'll never know .... "Its too late" could be how you'd describe the running of the trains under BR ... Anyway back on topic you can back up your claim I knew the goods were stolen can't you , its only the second time Ive asked you for proof ???

You're being totally disingenuous and it's looking very silly now. You openly boasted in your previous post about receiving "many things , lead , stone , power tools and so on all at the taxpayers expense" from a BR maintenance employee and quipped about it being "the good old days". So either you did..........or were simply cooking up a wild untruthful story.

Rather than blindly blunder on making it worse than you already have, i'd suggest you go for the easy way out by admitting the latter. I know that's hard for you and a harsh lesson, but you have to learn.
