Another battery Question

Went out to the motorhome today, it's moored up in the garden, pressed the demobiliser button to unlock it and no bleep bleep. Tried to unlock the door but that didn't work either. So had to manually unlock the door 8-) only to find that it's totally dead. No lights will come on, no radio, nothing. Starter battery's doing a good impression of a pancake - totally flat 8o|

Put it on charge via a separate stand alone charger and after an hour or so checked it and the interior light above the mirror is on. Best and favourite 3yr old granddaughter was messing about in it on Monday "driving" it and bless her, reckon she must have switched the light on and I didn't spot it, so of course it's my fault :-S .

So, battery is now on charge & I phoned a local battery speciailist and he recommends I take it in to them tomorrow and they'll check it when it's charged and if it's fubar'd recommends a new 100Ah battery at £142. Sorry I didn't get what brand that is.

Does this sound about right to you experts?

Checking with Auntie Google and there's loads recommended so which brand is best? I've had a brief search here but can't find A&A's recommendation.

Guess my question is, what do you suggest? And how do I get the radio code back if it's gone? RTFM?

A Yuasa Silver 100 Ah '019' is currently £143 at Halford's so seems a good price as long as it is a good make. And as a comparison the Yuasa has a FIVE year guarantee at any branch of Halford's, what guarantee is your local garage offering?

If you can find someone with a Haford's trade card the price falls by a massive amount!

Keith.

I left a internal light on in my car for several days, everything was completely dead, put startercharger on for 1/2hr then started and drove car, that was about three years ago and it's still fine.

A recommended good quality battery (which I have recently fitted to van) is Varta LFD90, £105 delivered from Alpha Batteries.

As stated by Colin "A recommended good quality battery (which I have recently fitted to van) is Varta LFD90"

This was one of the recommended batteries by Allan (sadly no longer with us) of AandN Caravans http://www.aandncaravanservices.co.uk who was deemed by many to be the unofficial forum expert on batteries and many other aspects of motorhome electrical systems.

Suggest you have a read of his website for more advice.

Tayna lists some “019”-size starter batteries here:

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/019/

Allan Evans used to suggest fitting a Varta LFD90 ‘dual-purpose’ battery as a Ducato x250/X290’s starter-battery on the basis that a) it would tolerate a motorhome standing idle for extended periods better than a ‘conventional’ starter-battery and b) if Varta LFD90 batteries were used throughout a motorhome for starting and habitation purposes, those batteries could be interchanged if the need arose.

Nothing wrong with the LFD90, but I notice that Tayna is advertising the Exide Premium EA1000 at a good price.

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/exide/ea1000/

I suggest you fully charge the present FIAMM battery (leave it on charge for at least 48 hours) and then check if will continue to start your motorhome easily over (say) a fortnight. Even though that battery has been heavily discharged, it may recover completely and not require replacement.

There’s little point taking it to a local battery specialist today, and you should certainly be careful to confirm what battery they are recommending for £142.

As for the radio code - Yes RTFM. Nowadays radios tend not to have codes and a battery going flat or being replaced usually won’t prevent the radio functioning.

Your totally flat flat battery (and removing it to charge etc) shouldn't "wipe" your radio codes etc. The only thing you may need to reset is the date and time etc on the vehicles clock easily done from the central touch screen) or at any rate that was my experience in my 2017 Citroen

The radio shouldn't need a code, as per the thread Derek linked to above. The radio talks to the body computer, and as long as it has the correct VIN programmed in it, they will sort it out between them.

If you have the auto clock setting, the time should correct itself as well. Mine changes automatically for DST and when crossing time zones (uConnect 5.0 radio).
