John52 - 2020-04-17 11:28 PM Stuart you have just had it pointed to you how much was visible back in January, which you seem to have accepted in your first sentence. But by the 3rd sentence you seem to have forgotten it again and go back to saying 'with hindsight'Either you have the attention span of a knat, or you just can't bring yourself to criticise the clown in charge.

There is no need to be offensive John52.

I suggest that you are struggling to understand the difference between what was visible but not easily recognisable at the time, including by yourself at that time, and what can be more easily seen in retrospect now, i.e. with the benefit of hindsight.

Just because you now have the benefit of hindsight doesn't mean that others should have recognised it in January, when you didn't either.  If you think I'm wrong, post a link to a post of yours dated in January when you were telling us all about it.  I realise that you've always thought Boris was a liability but you saying that in January wouldn't quite serve for this purpose.

Other countries locked down long before us.And snapped up the supplies of PPE and ventilators before us.That could be seen an the time - we did not have to wait till now to see it.And why won't BoJo tell us his plans? All I have seen so far id based on testing - for which he has been scammed into paying for over 3 million testing kits that don't work: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52335210 and his pooper scoopers have tried in vain to get us a refund onOther countries bought up their supplies whilst BoJo was asleep at the wheel, so now we are scratting around for what they have left.
......and you b*ggered off to Cornwall whilst leaving you house empty YET again *-) ...........Your pontificating about the homeless obviously doesn't extend to putting your Gaff where your Gob is >:-) .........

Barryd999 - 2020-04-18 8:20 AM Well my social media feed was alive with people saying stuff like WTF is Johnson doing? Remember not that long ago he was boasting on national television about going round a hospital where people had Coronavirus shaking hands? Lets face it, they wasted about seven weeks and now we are paying the price, its as simple as that. Im pretty sure it was all deliberate though. I think they still want everyone to get it and are prepared to sacrifice the old and the weak to a much higher extent than most other countries. Dont get me wrong, this might actually be a good policy (not that they would admit its policy) but its pretty brutal.....

The media feed will always be alive with people ranting at our politicians but I don't remember seeing anything remotely like informed and considered analytical comment suggesting a better way in the early days.  Our Government started off by trying to keep the virus out of the Country (eg by quarantining arrivals from infected areas abroad) and in retrospect we can see that they failed to shut down general incoming international travel as a necessary part of that policy (and the FCO failed to issue early advice against all foreign travel, so holidaymakers were still going abroad) when the infection had already spread far more widely than had been recognised.  It would be interesting to discover what the PHE advice to the Government was at the time because I suspect they were still slavishly following their 'flu pandemic plans at that stage - but I would also guess this was a time when the politicians were on an early part of their learning curve and perhaps swallowed the idea that containment could be made to work without those more radical steps.  At that stage I think the Government would not yet have been advised just how big and bad this outbreak would become.  Then realisation dawned and they were suddenly facing the likelihood that NHS critical care would be overwhelmed and they had very limited stocks of PPE and critcal care equipment for this type of pandemic and no existing domestic supply chain, so they had to set to and make the best of the situation - which is when they started doing sensible things quickly, like organising the Nightingale hospitals, which was pretty impressive.  Likewise getting the ventilators and the CPAP devices made.

Whether it will eventually emerge that our Government realised but ignored the early opportunities I doubt; I think it more likely that PHE advice was initially lacking in foresight and perhaps even barking ineffectullay up the wrong tree.  But once realisation dawned the Government do seem to have got a grip (including of PHE) and handled things relatively well.  Hence my view that the government should be supported rather than undermined by second guessing with the benefit of hindsight at this stage.

There has always been potential gain for a government by letting the old folks quietly die off, to save the cost of their state pensions as well as the costs of their care, but as I see it the Government have been very clear that their objective is to save as many lives as possible (including elderly and unhealthy lives) and that we deal with the economic consequences of the shut down as a second priority.

I was not a fan of Boris and I suppose I did think of him as a clown before he go the Conservative Leadership but I've changed my mind; he's risen to the challenge well, formed a good team which is working well together and achieving good things.  I thought the Chief Medical Officer was a bit of a lightweight too initially, but both he and the Chief Scientific Officer have done very well too.  The Government have a clear "party line" to deliver their firm-but-flexible policy, which I think makes  good sense.  So I am a supporter and I criticise those who are failing to support in this time of national need.

I read last night (and saw a Police directive) that right in the peak of all this the police are being advised to allow people to drive to places for exercise now..

Well that was never illegal, more chaos was caused by politicians suggesting it was.

I can understand people cooped up in sho-boxsized flats with no outside, only crowded streets to exercise in - maybe the only way they can exercise safely is to get in their car and drive to somewhere less crowded.

But at least the divide and rule created saves the Government from scrutiny.

"crowded streets" ??? ... Where ??? ... Apologies , I see what ya mean ...

You have only got to look at the population density of many towns and cities to see there isn't enough room for them all to exercise safely outside.

So who can blame them for driving to somewhere less crowded

Apart from the selfish nimbys who live there and the sleazy politicians who pander to them for their votes

jumpstart - 2020-04-18 11:44 AMThe WHO have announced that there is no evidence that you have immunity once you have survived cv19. So Herd protection doesn’t exist.

As I understood it all they have said is that there is no evidence to prove immunity after surviving infection SO FAR, i.e.don't count your chickens yet, which isn't the same thing as having evidence that there isn't any immunity - or did I misunderstand?  So far I've only heard anecdotal evidence from China of one or two isolated cases of people suffering the illness twice, nothing in the way of a proper clinical study.

The Shaddow Duchy of Lancaster lady was on this morning, suggesting the Government are neglecting the availability of the many small companies which are itching to start producing PPE, if only the Government would ask them.

But she wasn't offering a ready made list of the contact details of such companies, just moaning that the Government are ignoring them.  In her previous sentence she had been acknowledging that the Government (and the civil service) are working 24/7 on PPE, so how is helpful just flagging up the additional area of opportunity without researching and presenting a useful contact list herself?

You actually get to meet a lot more people - I sit in my armchair looking out the big side door at the beach - most people just walk past, but some look in. Comments are over 99% positive - young people always positive, saying things like Cool!. Thats the way to do it...Wow, what a great idea. Occasionally (and its ALWAYS an old person) - you hear somebody mutter something like 'not a bloody campsite' and once in Gorran Haven an old buffer . looked like a retired Colonel.. looked in open mouthed.. said 'Good God' and walked off shaking his head :D

But back to the thread title.

If we get BoJo to announce his plans, so we are able to watch him, it might make him think twice about using our tax money to bail out his £billionaire tax avoiding chums: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/21/richard-branson-bailout

so he is not holidaying on their Caribbean islands with the Government paralysed in a crisis because they can't do anything without his permission - again.

Now we have the highest deaths in the EU, Highest drop in GDP in the G7, A vast amount of extra borrowing to pay for useless PPE

More daily deaths than at the start of the lockdown, and the message is

Seems to have escaped your attention that Jeremy Corbyn is not the one responsible for our Covid19

As for Nicola Sturgeon

If you read your links before posting them you would see

from your link;

Scotland's death toll is 8.8% of the English figure, lower than the 9.4% overall population comparison with England.

Maybe thats why BoJo has to keep making U turns to follow her lead.

The point is England has a greater percentage of its population dying from Covid than Scotland

What difference does it make where they are dying?

In any case, its meaningless without comparing the percentage of the population in care homes in both countries.

Thanks to all your money BoJo sends us :D to buy votes and maintain his empire at your expense,

social care is better funded in Scotland, which suggests more people in care homes.
