Confuscious - he say a lot more than a few selected quotes!

Yes here are a couple of good ones. :-D

"In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of."

"Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire."

I’ve been there quite a few times over the years , all around the country, most recently in Rome. I think I preferred the 60’s and 70’s as it seemed less pretentious than now.

I don't know what data your government shares with the population and I don't care.

But the internet is full of independent data sources.

It does not seem to me that the nations of the European Community have reacted badly in fighting the pandemic.

With the exception of Sweden (which, by the way, is not in the euro zone), coincidentally it is a nation that trusted in herd immunity.

Outside the Community, of course not speaking of Trump's kingdom, I know another one but I leave you to find out which it is.

As for the economy, it is useless to make meaningless comparisons.

I suggest you look at your data since 1976 and also those from 1993 when the customs barriers were broken down.

Then wait a couple of years and check the progress again.

I'll give you two years because I won't consider the next one, the pandemic will surely have a dramatic impact and it wouldn't make sense to evaluate it.

I repeat, I wish you all the best but only time will tell,

Max

Mister emoticon, let's put it this way.

August 1976, pub on Oxford Street / Baywater Road (not a notorious Soho street).

I have lunch in a nice pub. I ask where the toilet is.

Downstairs they tell me.

Well, the staircase and floor were so dirty that shoes stuck to the tiles.

Can I say that all British pubs are like that one ?

Maybe not, what do you think?

As for the pornographic key rings for sale, I don't see anything strange.

Maybe you're the one who has some form of morbid curiosity or at least prudery.

Maybe they only sell them to guys like you.

However the ancient populations had a relationship with sex quite different from the Anglo-Saxon Puritan one.

Not only in Pompeii, you just have to enter the ceramics section of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens to find vases and dishes with highly explicit contents.

I don't think it is adults only but if one wants, he can avoid visiting it.

Just as he can avoid visiting the brothels of Pompeii that I bet you saw and key rings vendors.

Every country has it's own foibles, highlights and low spots.

We enjoy France and Spain but there are aspects that are less appealing.

We love living in the UK but there are aspects that are less appealing.

We have not seen much of Italyand we liked what we have seen but as with all countries there are no doubt less appealing aspects of Italy

It is very sad when reflections of an entire country and it's people who, by and large, are no different from anyone else in Europe are summed up in a few derogatory words, albeit in humour, as mainland European humour can be very different to UK humour.

A few more years of the EU and there will be no differences between countries as the Brussells one size fits all mantra is applied!

In a few short years you will all use the Euro, drive on the wrong side of the road, and speak German as your second language!

Agree on everything except the last ...

However in Alsace they are already Germans but don't tell Madame Le Pen ...

If you think you can ever go back to Italy, give me your rough itinerary, tell me what you have already seen, what your interests are and how long you think to spend there and I will be more than happy to give you hints on places that you don't even imagine.

p.s. We use euros since the beginning. Are you going back to farthings and shillings ? Smile.

Wrong side ? You kow that the clever Swedish in one night have been able to switch driveside from left to right (google Dagen H) ? Smile again.

Thanks Max, unfortunately health issues will probably stop us seeing more of Italy by our preferred mode of Motorhome touring but it was a kind and much appreciated thought.

Our currency seems to work fine for us and whilst maybe not ideal for the rest of Europe we do at least have the freedom to ruin our own country's economics without any help from the EU!

That was a remarkable and brave transformation that the Swedish people undertook in 1967 but I fancy that current elf and safety rules, and the general loss of common sense by UK residents, would make it a lot more difficult these days!

Sweden had less population than London, so not really terribly difficult, however in Rome they drive on both sides of the road and try crossing the road as a pedestrian.

1) There are still a few pubs like that though not a lot. You will find them in tacky areas like Blackpool and Skegness. Commonly known as 'dives' meaning a rough place. I doubt they get much custom so thankfully most have long shut down! Oxford street is just a crazily busy shopping street in central London and not the most ideal place to have a drink. Soho has totally changed. All the strip clubs have gone and now there are restaurants and coffee bars.....but not cheap! It's always going to be expensive in any city.

2) Brits have an odd mindset rooted in Victorian days when it comes to pornography.

3) I was only once in Italy, by accident! I was in the south of France and planned to drive Route Napoleon heading for Switzerland, but the road was closed due to a dispute. This was pre-GPS days so all my planning was via hard mapping. Also it was pre-Euro and before long i found myself over the border in Italy....with zero Lira!

... however in Rome they drive on both sides of the road and try crossing the road as a pedestrian...

If you have problems in Rome now I understand why your women are not able do 30 feet of reverse when we meet them in some passing zone on the Scottish single tracks.

However Rome is far from the ranking of the worst cities.

Try Naples where red traffic light is just a warning: someone could cross your way ...

Or Catania where there are 1.5 cars per lane.

Or Palermo where the signs Give way are to be interpreted in reverse (Palermitan kindness let you pass if they have precedence but the opposite must also apply).

However nothing to worry about.

If you really want to learn to drive with ease you have to try (increasing order of required skills):

Mexico

Cairo

All Indian cities. But here you have too many advantages, they drive on the left too. Almost always....

Romans also taught you how to collapse it.

Think what a coincidence:

September 4, 476 (AD) - abdication of Romulus Augustus and fall of the Roman empire.

Always on the fourth day of a month of thirteen centuries after the beginning of the collapse of the English one.

You kow what I mean.
