rayc
The Government have " made provision for bus and lorry drivers aged 45 and over to forego the need for a D4 medical in order to renew their driving entitlement. The licence will only be valid for one year instead of five years and the driver will need to submit a completed D4 when the licence is due for renewal in 12 months" Perhaps they have likewise made provision for C1 'Grandfather Rights' licence short term renewal? https://www.gov.uk/guidance/dvla-coronavirus-covid-19-update
rayc
To answer my own question it appears that: "This notice does not apply to any application to renew small lorry (C1) and minibus (D1 (101)) entitlements included on car licences issued before 1997." https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/applications-for-renewing-lorry-and-bus-driving-licences-at-age-45-and-over-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic/important-applications-for-the-renewal-of-lorry-and-bus-driving-licences-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic

StuartO
It looks like DVLA have made no provision for renewing C1 licences for over 70s without a medical - which looks like an oversight. Has anyone tried ring DVLA to ask? Clearly if you can't get a medical done at present there should be some provision to renew for at least one year, like the lorry drivers. But even more importantly, if you do not submit a valid application INCLUDING a medical then you CANNOT continue driving any vehicle over 3,500 kg. Keith.
