I'd be tempted to play them at their own game. Contact them and ask which one as you own three vehicles.....all currently on SORN. :D

I had an E Mail supposedly from O2 this week, saying they could not collect my Direct Debit and to avoid charges I should contact blah blah and make a payment to them another scam to watch out for.

Best one i had was BT (had them a few times now) saying my internet connection will be cut in the next hour and to contact them. I went along with it....pushed 1 to speak to an operative and though nobody was on the line, the line was 'open' and i could hear lots of people speaking in the background in a foreign language, no idea what as it wasn't one i was familiar with. Eventually a guy came on the line speaking in perfect English. I asked him for my BT account number and without hesitating he rattled off a number and i said, "that's not my account number" which was as far as i got as he just cut the line at that point!

I sent the one I got to TPT, below is the reply I got from them

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Traffic Penalty Tribunal has become aware of a potential ‘phishing’ email scam circulating from a sender claiming to be from HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS).

‘Phishing’ is a type of online scam, where an email that appears to be from a legitimate company or organisation asks the reader to provide sensitive information or payment.

The phishing email in question is requesting payment of an alleged penalty charge, though there is no indication of the authority / specific location that the penalty relates to. The email also contains spelling and grammar errors. The sender’s email address is also not a genuine HMCTS email address domain. Emails from HMCTS usually end in justice.gov.uk.

What action should you take?

The Traffic Penalty Tribunal is not in a position to advise anyone who has received the potential ‘phishing’ email; however, based on the apparent content and sender of the email, we recommend that anyone receiving the email ignores it.

We will be informing HMCTS and Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, of this potential ‘phishing’ email scam.

The Ministry of Justice (which HMCTS is part of) has a page on its website relating to fraud and scams, including the illegal misuse of its logos. This is available at: https://www.justice.gov.uk/help/fraud

Suspected cyber fraud, such as ‘phishing’ emails, can be reported on the Action Fraud website at: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

If yu get the type of email Zydeco Joe refers to above and you enter a significant chunk of the text into GOOGLE

(for example)

For the following: the use of a vehicle on a road in the charging area which a charging scheme applies without payment of the appropriate charge, at the date and timestarted below

If it’s a known scam, the likelihood is that the GOOGLE results will confirm this.

This particular scam seems to have started a while back as this 3 October entry shows

So the scam worked, you contacted them on a premium rate telephone number,

I had one supposedly from DVLA saying the details they held for my payments needed updating. Strange to receive it the day after I had an MOT. The DVLA don't keep payment details as you pay by debit card as and when , not automated. Checking the email address that sent it , it originated in Belgium. That's the first thing to check in any of these scams.

Another scam I nearly fell for when trying to register a new virus protection code of Nortons on my computer when it doesn't load properly gives a telephone no to ring for help.

You are assured by some indian sounding geezer not to worry , they will sort it out, they will tell you that your computer is infected with porn sites 8-) they go on to tell you they can clear it for £300 , The penny then dropped as they say I made an excuse and left. Fortunatly I doubt everything when money is mentioned, can't understand how Norton can allow this to happen to their site though.

No. In trying to make it brief i can see why my post was misunderstood, so to clarify; they called me, told me the internet connection would be disconnected and then went through a menu of options one of which was "press 1 to speak to an operative",

So no the scam didn't work as i already knew about it and secondly, no it didn't cost me anything. The BT internet connection scam is possibly the most common.....even an 87 year old relative of mine gets them which amuses him greatly as he's never owned a computer!
