If it’s a Scottish Road they will have to engineer the potholes and make it single track .

At least the Scots are smart enough to have put passing zones everywhere.

In England (e.g. Cornwall) not even those.

Could this be the reason why the best-selling motorhome accessory are mirror guards ?

Yes ,it was a joke, as you know ,like the roads , worse than some of the dirt tracks in New Zealand.

What do you expect for 0.00037p per year? :D ..........

Lets dig a tunnel to Northern Ireland a thousand feet below the sea through a seabed littered with volatile WW2 munitions in order to sneak stuff into Northern Ireland! (lol)

Can someone point out to me what difference this will make to the current situation?

.

It means that customs checks will be at the end of a tunnel, instead of in ports.

Of course straight roads are better, everyone knows that.

But the Romans were a conquering army

They could build straight roads because they didn't care what was in their way

They just took it

I can't speak for NZ but i've driven some very remote roads in Scotland such as the B871 south of Invernaver and the B887 to Hushinish on the outer Hebrides, both excellently maintained with good surface.

Yes, and not just that. There are roads with hairpin bends on hills I couldn't get up in my FWD van in both Lake District and Cornwall. Never found one in Scotland.

Built by the Romans.

Four centuries of Roman domination were not enough to teach you the basics of road engineering.

In fact, just googling something like "roman roads in great britain" and you will see maps from which you will discover that the Romans have nothing to do with the Cornish roads.

Which are pure Blighty technology.

Maybe you need to update your maps....

According to several antiquaries there were two Roman roads through Cornwall, both of which can be still partially traced. One was a continuation of Watling-street, and, coming by Exeter, entered Cornwall at Saltash, passed through Liskeard and Lostwithiel—with branches to Looe and Fowey—to St. Austell, Truro, Falmouth, and on to the west. The other passed through, Stratton, Camelford, Bodmin, Redruth, and St. Ives to the Land’s End.

Hardknott Pass in Cumbria is notoriously bad and the last time I drove it I was shocked at the state it had fallen into. Patches all over the place and chunks of asphalt crumbling away at the edges.

Romans never got into Scotland

Partially true.

Although it has been led to believe that the Romans only reached Hadrian's Wall, they went further north, into what is Scotland today. There are still quite evident traces of the Antonine Wall, built about twenty years after the most famous.

That they then stop facing the resistance and bravery of the Scottish peoples is certainly true.

Well the Scottish people had a lot of help from the mountainous terrain which greatly favoured the defenders.

Even the border country is very difficult - so much so that the Scottish and English rail networks weren't connected for some years. You had to go up to Fleetwood by rail, get a boat to Ardrossan to rejoin the rail network.

Like the Rock of Gibraltar where a small garrison kept the entire French & Spanish armies at bay till they gave up.

If you walk up the Rock of Gibraltar, like some of Scotlands mountains, you begin to appreciate how difficult they would be to attack. Like Switzerland - Hitler left it because of its mountains.

Which makes it all the more remarkable that Scottish roads are more passable for Motorhomes than some of Englands.

I don't think Hitler didn't invade Switzerland because of the mountains.

Most likely for the money the Germans had in their banks.

As for the orography of Scotland and the Romans, keep in mind that Ben Nevis is as high as the lower Prealps or the Vosges which were conquered a hundred years earlier.

More likely, the Romans stop because they considered that Scotland was not worth the effort of a war of attrition being at that time not very interesting from an economic point of view.

Well the Scottish people had a lot of help from the mountainous terrain which greatly favoured the defenders.

Even the border country is very difficult...

...

... Like Switzerland - Hitler left it because of its mountains.

I would have thought the money in Switzerland would be an attraction to Hitler.

He threatened to invade Switzerland if they didn't do as he told them.

The Swiss said if you do that we will withdraw from the lowlands, and fight a war of attrition from the mountains like the British did at Gibraltar

Hitler said 'you won't'

Swiss said 'we will'

etc

I think Hitler believed them but who knows?

What made Scotland so difficult to invade is that there are large areas where they could only get weapons and supplies in by the sea lochs. Doing that whilst under attack would be suicide without local knowledge.

The Jacobite rebellion failed because both sides had that. Its commonly misconstrued as England v Scotland but in fact there were English and Scots on both sides. They didn't care who won as both sides were as bad. They just wanted to be on the winning side! Some families hedged their bets by having two brothers with one fighting on each side!
