Well that's another promise broken

Privatising our power and water supplies was like privatising our railways.

I didn't see how it could work to our benefit, and still don't.

(apart from getting in on the undervalued share issues which I did, on the grounds that if someone was going to make money out of it, that might as well be me)

Even Norman Tebbit said Railway Privatisation wouldn't work

But, like Brexit, they did it anyway

The only major country in the world to sell off our power and water supplies to foreign corporations :-S

And we have millions of tons of coal beneath our feet

Boris 'the butcher' could have easily followed his promise and dropped VAT on fuel on leaving EU, but it seems it was just another lie.

Now we have the government following leftie ideas, with a cap on prices, and then promising to give tax payers money to the 'big' companies who take on customers from failed smaller companies.

We left the EU to stop them getting into Her Majesty's Tax havens and making the wealthiest pay tax.

So he taxes the little people more instead >:-)

No doubt we will get the usual defensive insulting comments from the brexiters on this thread. Interesting how defensive they have to be - probably because remainers can produce a long and qualitative list of things that are damaging britain as result of brexit, but the leave side struggle to come up with anything tangible (usual meaningless words such as sovereignty, control blah blah). The only thing they try to hang onto is the vaccine programme, but that in itself is spurious as it was actins of a few clever people outside the govt. that got us going, nothing to do with being outside the EU.

Without doubt brexit has broken many promises and has also broken britain, but a bit like trying to convert a catholic to aetheism you won't get anywhere with them, brexiteers still believe the fantasy and won't admit it was wrong.

So world gas prices going up is due to Brexit? ;-) ..........

Perhaps you LOSERS could explain how that works??? (lol) (lol) (lol) ........

Take a look at the spot price for electric

"The highest residential electricity prices within Europe are paid in Germany [30.34 cents] and Denmark [28.33] for many years in a row now. The price per kilowatt hour is more than three times higher than in Bulgaria [9.97 cents]. Belgium [27.92 cents] and Ireland [24.13 cents] are competing for the 3rd and 4th position in the electricity price ranking. Spain follows in fifth place with 22.39 cents per kilowatt hour."

There seems little point arguing with someone who says that he can't find something on Google, particularly when he has posted something that shows that he has found the current SPOT price already.

From your link ;-) ............

"The cost of buying enough wholesale gas and electricity in the spot market to supply an average household is estimated at about £1,600 a year, while the Ofgem-set price cap on energy bills is at present £1,277, having already been raised by £139 last month."

When did the spot market become the same as the wholesale market??? 8-) ..........

But a necessary part of a dysfunctional market created by privatisation. The big six also buy and sell on the spot market, when the hedges they have taken leave them buying too much or too little at times of unforeseen demand.

About to become even more dysfunctional when we only have a handful of suppliers left who can rig the market between them. The only thing they will compete for is lobbying politicians for more taxpayer's money.

People forgot why we brought our railways, power and water supplies into public ownership.

Be fair if we expect Pelmethead to apologise every time he has been wrong, he will be spending the four months he used to be allowed to spend in Spain busy on here correcting all his mistakes and apologising, he will be that busy it will probably crash the server.

I think Pelmethead realised this a while ago, I mean that is the only explanation for his behaviour as I'm sure even he could not be so rude to do otherwise.

So is the EU's market not privatized (?) .........

Yes it's a mess in Europe too, although most governments are more hands on with regulation and some are moving back to renationalisation.

If you want a example of what is wrong with privatisation of key resources look no further than CF Industries UK

Due to rising natural gas costs, the country’s largest provider of carbon dioxide (CO2), CF Industries, which provides 45% of Britain’s CO2, recently declared that it was halting its UK operations, with the US company’s owners blunting stating that it was no longer profitable to continue production.

This promptly led to panic across the economy, due to the vital role that CO2 plays in areas such as food packaging, fizzy drinks, and slaughterhouses. As a result, bosses warned of empty supermarket shelves, and the prospect of poultry and pork supplies running out within days.

Meat industry These pressures exacerbate an already-dire situation for British businesses, with widespread reports of bottlenecks and labour shortages: from lorry drivers to meat industry workers.

Pig farmers, for example, have estimated that they could be only two weeks away from culling a 100,000-strong surplus of healthy animals, due to a lack of workers and CO2. Other employers, meanwhile, have begged the government to allow them to use prison labour in order to fill their shortfall in workers.

Furthermore, business leaders are warning that these problems could persist for many months, leading to expected increases in food prices of 2.3% in the short-term, and wider inflation of 4% by the end of the year.

The scarcity of CO2 could also have a grave impact upon the NHS, as the gas is used in a number of medical procedures.

This comes at a terrible time for Britain’s healthcare system, which is already overstretched and understaffed, with staff working flat out to reduce the millions-strong backlog that has built up during the pandemic. And that is before a further wave of the virus – due to Tory recklessness – pushes more patients into overcrowded hospitals.

Parasites and profiteers

Faced with this all-round catastrophe, the government has stepped in, promising CF Industries temporary support in the order of £20 million to carry on production.

Responding to calls for this essential – but parasitic – producer to be brought under public ownership, Kwasi Kwarteng asserted that: “Between nationalisation and not doing anything, there are lots of options.”

Top of the list of said ‘options’, it seems, is that of kicking the can down the road, and siphoning off millions in taxpayers’ money to another set of unscrupulous bosses – all to avoid a crisis precipitated by their profit system.
